Do you always open your door when someone knocks on it?

Since I live in a secure building and anyone who comes to visit needs to ring my bell I seldom open my door when someone is knocking on it. Most times it's just someone in the building looking for a cigarette. Sometimes it's a guy down the hall (who is usually looking for a cigarette lol) just asking how I'm doing which is nice but sometimes when I don't answer the door because I'm sleeping he rings the bell. Whenever my son is coming over he'll call me so I always know it's not him. I also look out my window to see if there's a car there that I know just in case he forgets to call which really never happens but I look anyway.
Do you always open your door when someone knocks on it? If someone is coming over do they call you first to let you know? Have you ever pretended you aren't home?

Hehe..I often pretend I'm not home. If I'm not expecting anyone I just plain don't answer. The chances though of someone just knocking on my door are nil...if its someone from outside they have to ring my downstairs bell...then I can rush and look out the window...if I see if it's a mail or UPS truck indicating I have a package then no problem, I let the person in. I've had some real weirdos though. For some reason I don't think people really READ which apt. building they are in...you see there are two "sets" of buildings on my block that are identical looking, mine and the other one, so often some jerk most likely means to go to the other building but winds up here instead...I've had half drunks very late at night trying to use their key to get in my apartment thinking it was the apartment in the other building...I yell at them (from behind my closed door) "you got the wrong apt. a$$hole." Uh, diplomatic I'm not. LOL

I do the same thing and look to see if there is a UPS or DHl truck out there before I open the door in the day. Since there are 18 apartments in my building a lot of times someone will ring my bell if they forgot their key and since I'm on the first floor of course mine is the first one I ring. I've started not even answering those...lol...

I too live in a secure building and we have a buzz code that does not coincide with the apartment number. When my family comes over they phone beforehand. Also we have a lobby channel so if someone buzzes me and I don't expect anyone I check who it is by turning my TV on and look into the lobby. Sometimes it is the postman to deliver a parcel, then I buzz him in. Sometimes people knock directly at my door. We have a spy lense in the door so I can look out to see who it is. If it is one of my neighbours of course I open. Sometimes during election time people who support their candidate let them in the building and they go from door to door. I usually do not open and they leave their pamphlets at the door. Sometimes it is teenagers who collect money for this or that. If I don't know them I ask through the door which apartment they live in and what their name and purpose of the call is. If I recognize them and want to support their cause I open, if I am not interested I say no thank you through the door. Sometimes if I am lying down I just ignore the knock.

Having the tv must be cool. That would be so nice if we had one here! I'm sure my neighbors would think twice before knocking.

Nooooooo way. I hardly ever answer the door, but particularly if I'm not expecting anyone. I don't think of myself as a recluse or anything, but I just like my privacy. I don't know if I'm alone in this, but I think it's pretty rude for people to just show up unannounced.
I used to live in a pretty bad neighborhood and I made a point to tell people that if they came over and hadn't called to let me know that they'd be showing up--and pretty close to the exact time--don't expect me to answer the door. At that place, I had the challenge that there wasn't a peephole or window in the door so I had no way of telling who was there. Needless to say, I got my share of calls from people saying 'Hey, I was just at your place. Didn't you hear me knock?'

Yes, I have pretended to not be home, when it is sales. I do not normally expect anyone to come by what little I am home. I am always at work it seems.

No not always. I have a peep hole so I can check to see who is outside my door. Our building is secure too and you need a card or pin number to get into the building. I can tell usually by the sound of the knock who it is, like my neighbor, mailman and or fedex guy. We usually get a call if friends and or family visit.
I don't always answer my door when I am not in the mood for having visitors like today. My neighbour knocked and its usually long and loud. Then she uses the door knocker and bangs with that very loudly GRRR it's annoying sometimes because I'm sure all the other neighbors can hear it. I have pretended many a time that I am not home.

I have a big window right by my front door and I can usually see who is walking up to my door if I know them I will just yell at them to come in. If I don't know them or I did not see who was walking up I will go tot the door and open it.

Unfortunately for me I can't see who's at my door unless I look through the little peephole which I hate to do because I feel like they can hear me coming and know I'm there...lol...

I try to make it a habit not to open my door whenever someone knocks, ctry, because you never know who might be on the other side. I admit that I have slipped up a couple of times recently, but it will only serve to make me that much more careful in the future. I live in a "secure" building also, but there is a lot of traffic in and out -sometimes people of questionable character. My ex is forever warning me not to open my door to anyone unless I'm sure who it is knocking. I have a peephole but I never bother to use it. I just yell out asking who it is. I seldom answer my buzzer because everyone knows to call if they are coming over.

I have 2 doors from the house onto one porch plus a window inbetween. I look out my window. You are in a better to position to pretend than I am. In the country, if there is a car in the driveway, they know someone is there. When my car is in the shope, I can get away with it. But I have used the once a day bus where I live before so people shouldn't assume I'm home because my car is in the driveway, also I own 10 acres, I could be walking that or bottle collecting. I check out my window and often I use whatever door the person isn't using to go out and come up behind that person. I stand by the door to leave the porch and call to the person, "May I help you?" This temporarily put the person off guard and I have an escape route covered. My car is parked by the porch door exit. But sometimes I don't answer because I'm sleeping or taking a shower (for real) or that's my excuse. I have 3 ways out of my home in an emergency that are doors and one large window (big enough for my current overweightness).

I always open my door, for the simple reason I can see who is at the door from my living room window, plus its usually only family who come knocking. I wish I could try and not answer the door to a certain sister in law, but my daughter always lets her in!!!!!

No I don't always open my door whether its to a knock or the door bell. I always make sure I know who it is before I open it. When I was living in an apartment I had a peep hole to look out of before I opened it. Now I live in a house I look through the window on top of my door, to see who it is first. I don't just open my door without looking. Now a days I think that opening our doors without knowing who it is, would be very careless and not the smartest thing to do. You never know who could be there.

When I lived in an apartment, I never opened the door unless I was expecting someone. People are too crazy now to chance it. I always looked first to see who it was, and then asked. If I knew them, I would let them in. Be careful!

Hello, ctrymuziklvr! you make a small hole on the door from which you can have a clear view of the person who is ringing the bell and after being convinced think of your safety and either open the door or deny with some words to him.but in any case you must not open the door before you are satisfied with the genuineness of the person calling you, else some time you may be in trouble.some years back a friend mine, living in a house alone with his wife.one day two boys came and asked the lady to give them water to drink.the lady had opened the door and the two boys entered in to the house and took control of my friend and his wife and looted every thing.so you must be careful while opening the door.thank you.

No i dont always open the door when someone knocks! I can see who is knocking on my door without them seeing me, so I always check first, and if I dont recognise them I dont open it! This is down to the door to door sellers that always seem to be lurking about and some religious people sometimes come knocking too. I open it for the posties and any friends or family but they usually phone first, well the friends and family that is not the posties!! I have pretended not to be home on one or two occasions, but this is going back some years when I had a bit of a debt and i knew it was the bailiffs! Those occasions were really horrible! I am pleased to say though that i did eventually sort it out and dont have to worry about them now!

No. Is an honest answer. I live in a shared house and the doorbell always seem to be constantly ringing. Recently i have discovered it likes to ring on its own, having stood by the front door looking through the window at nothing, whilst the doorbell is eerily ringing away...
