A cat is an obligate carnivore which means that it can only really eat meat. That said, many cats will eat vegetables and grass, but these are not a normal part of a cat's diet and you can't feed a cat on a vegetable based diet. Practically speaking, you can feed your cat on any of the dry foods available like Iams or on tinned wet food. Your cat will very likely have her own preferences, so try her with several different types and brands of both dry and tinned food to begin with to see what she likes best. There are a lot of different types of both dry and tinned food available and if you are not sure what type to get, you could ask your vet for a advice.

Having had a couple, all I can offer is my experience with mine...
I kept both my Kitty's on dry w/occasional juice & lickin's from a tin of tuna, (I happen 2 love it 4 sandwiches... They did 2...Open a can, Kcheesh! they would come runnin') I was working alot so I left one of those 2-3 gallon Water & Feed thingys in the bathroom along w/their box so they could just knosh when I was out 4 a wknd...
A Tip... Once U start them on one (Dry or Wet) don't switch on em'... Make sure the dry is based on meat, not just meal (Of Course it's more expensive!)... It messes w/ their digestive systems if U switch & they have their ways of letting U know they R not pleased w/ UR handling of them...
My advise, based on my experience...Start/Keep her on dry w/occasional wet as a treat...my experience, they R great companions for an apt...

Alright the best dry food to feed your cat is Nutrience. I'm a 100% sure on Nutrience. You can buy it at Petsmart or other retailers. I don't reconmend wet canned food although Nutrience wasn't on the food scare list last year. Try your new guy on Nutrience dry diet and give your cat some canned tuna. For a treat once in a while give your cat wet canned cat food but always keep some dry food around.

I had signed up as a distributor of a pet products company a few months before the pet food scare and I was so glad I had when that happened. Prior to that I'd given my two babies Iams, which I thought was one of the best, only to find out it was involved in the recall. Anyway, the food I get now is actually a better value, dollar for dollar, that the "name" brands and they will eat less and be just as satisfied. On the website you can get a comparison with any other brand you'd like to match it against. It was formulated by a vet who is actually available to take your calls if you have any questions. My cats love it and if I run out they're not very happy, and once you've had your cat for awhile longer you'll know that if your cat's not happy nobody in HER house will be happy either...lol. PM me if you'd like more information about this food and their other pet care products. Good luck with your new baby.
