I don't know whether to get a part time job because I need to focus on my studies, but at the same time a few hours a week wouldn't necessarily be detrimental to my coursework and would allow me to better (and easier) fund my university lifestyle e.g. going out with friends, trips etc. What do you think?

it depends on the relationship between your studies and part-time job.what type of part-time jobs do you like to get,and how many hours a day or a week it will cost? Wether the time you spend on jobs will give you a pressure in studies...... what's more, you need how much money to better your university life.i think some unique methods to earn money might be easier than those which everyone is able to do.the best way is using your specialized knowledge to get your own money.

I think if you have time and have the ability.you also never work a part-time job.you can try to have a part-time job. Before i study in university,i havn't have part-time experence.i take my all attention to study hard.but after being in college,i have more free time.there are few lessons for me and little homework to do.So i go to find a part-time job to earn some money for myself.I think in school,i only have knowledge and no experience in society.i need some work experence for me to find job after graduate from university. It's very important for any person. If one person only know how to study and don't know how to put into practice.it is useless to learn knowledge. Many of my friends all have got a part-time job for some time.some of them give up of tired, anthor insist on.
You can have a try!

I worked part time while I was in college. I was a student assistant in the University's Information Office (I was hoping I'd be assigned in the library but there was no available slot anymore) and then became a parttime tutor while in junior college. I am an Education student anyway so I tried to use what I've learned already in college and start learning and earning from my tutees too.
Learn to prioritize your spendings. There are important and sometimes, unexpected projects that your professors would ask from you so better save for those that using your funds in going out. I am not against going out while in college, I did it too. Just make sure that you don't overspend on that. Also, having a money of your own makes you feel more fulfilled because its your own money you will be spending and not from your parents' pocket.

i agree with the one before me. if you have your own money, you'll feel a sense of satisfaction. and you won't be prone to spending extra as it's your hard earned money and you would usually want to save.
it's good that you want to earn and pay by yourself. not many think that way. they're still under their parents and even when their parents encourage them to work and they do, they over spend it.
like someone suggested it would be easier if you get an online job at your own time and all. you can go to all the job search sites. basically you'd be doing freelancing. there's one site on my profile. odesk. you can browse through if interested.
it's great that you want to work part time but also take note that you do not spend too much time working and forget about the education. best of luck.

I do not recommend it if you have high course loads or doing your majors. If you really need a part time job then get a light part time job. ALso get your priorities straight. You are first and foremost a student and therefore studies should be at the top your priorities.

Definately worth getting a part-time job whilst studying. It will both help to pay off your enrollment fees and keep you going whilst your studying, as well as provide a medium of escape when thinking about studies all the time starts to take its toll on your mind.

I think that it would be ok if you got a part time job but I would also suggest that you try and find something that you can do on the internet or something that way if you for some reason need to study more for something you won't have to worry about quitting your job or whatever because whenever you work on the internet you set your own hours and thats really the best kind of job that you can have because with college life you are constantly having to study for something and its not going to be too long until exams!
