My Son Has An Earache :(

My son woke me up 20 minutes ago (it's now 3.41am Sunday morning) telling me he had a sore inner left ear. I remembered reading a discussion on mylot several months back of some home remedies to help relieve the pain so I searched and came across a few. Instead of using salt like one person recommended, I warmed up a heat pack and wrapped it around a flannel (wash cloth) and he is now resting his ear on it. I think it may have worked because he is now sound asleep after 15 minutes of lying on it. We will see how he does tommorrow and decide from there whether we need to see a doctor.
It's nice to know that not only can I search online for any temporary pain relief issues, I can also find some answers here in mylot.

Make an appointment to see your doctor if your son has earache to comfirm the diagnosis and be advised on treatment.
There are several measures that you can take to relieve your son's earache. The problem can be very upsetting, especially for young children, so you need to calm your son and distract him from the pain.
Sit your son upright, resting on pillows, as this may reduce pressure in the middle ear. Your son will probably sleep better propped up in bed.
Holding a warm towel or well-covered hot-water bottle against the affected ear can help to soothe the pain. Applying warmth---Gentle heat can help to relieve earache. Use a well-wrapped hot-water bottle or heat a towel on aradiator or iron it. Check that it is not too hot, then hold it against the affected ear.
If there is no discharge, warm some oil(such as olive oil) to body temperature, then gently tip a teaspoon of the oil into the painful ear.
If your son's eardrum bursts, gently wipe away the discharge, keep the ear dry, and have it checked by the doctor.
Don't poke cotton-wool buds into your son's ear to try to clean it, or insert eardrops unless advised to do so by your doctor.

Thank you for that information cydzzj. I did use a heat pack and wrapped it in a facecloth and had him lie on it. It seemed to help because about 15 minutes later he fell asleep and when he woke up, his ear wasn't sore anymore. I have been monitoring him all day, asking him if it hurts and he says it is fine. He does have a bit of a cold so that is probably what started it all. Thanks again.

Aww sweety I do hope he feels better ,give him a hug from his friends here in Scotland espescially Niamh. I told her that your son has an earache and she is feeling very bad for him as she is just getting over her 2nd ear infection in a month! We had lots of sleepless nights with this and a lot of crying, mine as well as hers! Heat is a great thing to ease the pain of earache, we use a wheatgerm bag that you warm in the microwave - it has many, many uses! I do hope that his earache clears up quick! xxx

I am so pleased that Maddy is feeling better sweety - if it comes back again you should probably take him to the dr just to make sure there are no infections. Has he got or had a cold? That can cause everything to get inflamed and swell up and that really hurts their ear! Niamh goes back to the dr today but I think he will say just to keep taking the painkillers and heat packs as the infection should be gone with the antibiotics xxxx

Thanks mummymo. I am still going to get him checked out today because he was having trouble hearing me yesterday or maybe he was playing with me I'm not sure. I want to make sure there isn't anything serious going in his ears. Thanks for your suppport and I hope Niamh is feeling better too! HUGS

I just watched a MAJOR CAUTION on ear-aches in children. TOO many times we self-medicate this condition. It is very necessary that you see a Doctor before you do anything more. What the basis of the show was that we tend to buy over the counter rememdies, and treat. Many of these children had a small perforation in the ear-drum and these medications got into the middle ear. Serious hearing loss resulted, and at times more serious illness. Remember how close the ear is to the brain. Please see your Doctor. DO NOT try to cure this problem without consultation.

Thanks for your sound advice pergammano. Infact I have already scheduled a doctors appointment today because he was having trouble hearing me yesterday. I wasn't sure whether he was pretending not to hear me because as soon as I said that we need to see a doctor, he said "just kidding mum i can hear you". I'm not going to take it lightly either so figured I better just book it and get him checked out. The last time he had a hearing test they said he needed to see a specialist for a proper hearing test. We spent $125 to see that specialist only to tell us his hearing was 100%. I just figured they tested him wrong or else my son had something to do with it. Anyways sorry for rambling.
I was looking for some temporary relief that night until I was able to get him to see a doctor. But thanks for your comment, I do appreciate it.

yup it's true. my light bulb went off the other day i was recalled a discussion previously on my flickering light bulb so was going to refer back to that as well. It's definitely a great place to make friends and source for information on anything under the sun! sometimes it beats searching online for info because you are not sure whether what is online is actually reliable. but if you have gotten to know your mylot friends over a period of time, you know what they are good at and then you can trust their advice!

I agree. I was looking for some temporary relief and remembered that I answered a discussion several months back from one of my friends that I do trust. Just as well because it worked, but he is still seeing a doctor today! thanks squaretile!

I can't believe there is actually a forum on this but it is appreciated so much. I'm not a mother but when my 3 year old little boy wakes u up 5 times during the night about his ear hurting yalls discussion helped him get back to sleep. I never knew a warm towel on his ear could help so much. The things yall women come up with is amazing....
