Celebrity culture - Why do we want it?

This is my personal opinion, but I wish we could move away from this obsession with celebrities, I find it so irritating. Why do so many people buy celebrity magazines, why are we interested in these celebrities? Here in the UK, I think things are even worse, some celebrities are famous just for being celebrities they do not have any particular skills that justify their fame, they were just lucky. Let the film stars do their work, why are we interested in their private lives? I'm certainly not. Do you buy celebrity magazines that fuel the papparazzi?
