Forgetting a piece for a project...

Ugh! I went out today to pick up materials for a couple of sewing projects. I'm making a couple of baby shower gifts for my Godson's partner: a baby sling, a bag that attaches to the stroller and a couple of outfits. I already have the patterns, so I made a list of the fabric lengths & notions I would need. When it came time to head to the store I couldn't find my list. No big deal, right? I just grabbed the patterns, looked at the details & re-wrote my list. Except being in a hurry I just glanced at the pattern quickly and I missed that I need 1/2" elastic too. I finally have my baby sleeping, the table cleared of other projects and the peace & quiet I need for sewing and I realize I am missing the elastic! Of course it's 8:30 on a Sunday and there isn't a store within reasonable distance where I can pick some up tonight. I'm so frustrated. Thankfully the shower is still a week away, I have plenty of time but I doubt I'll have the quiet again.
Now that I am done ranting- do you make a list when you head to the fabric store? Do you just wing it? And do you often forget one little item like this?

Yes, I always make a list when I go to the fabric store, but I frequently lose it before I get there. And then I often don't get everything I need, but I have been sewing off and own for a long time and I tend to buy extras of things like elastic which can come in handy for many projects so I will always have some on hand. And I have inherited stuff to (after my mom and sister passes away) and my aunt stopped sewing. That helps me from getting too frustrated.

I keep a pretty good collection of extras on hand too. I forgot 3/4" elastic. I looked in my stash- I had elastic thread, 1/8" in white & black, 1/4" in white, 1" and thick 2" pretty much every freaking elastic ever made, except 3/4". I went back to the store today though & picked it up.

I always make a list. Even when I'm making only jewelry items, I'll often need to buy sterling silver, sterling plated and copper items, so I go through my inventory and buy what I need to make a certain amount of items.
With whatever money I have left over, I look for the store's clearance and sales items to see what, if anything they are selling that I can use at some point.
In a couple of weeks, I'll go to Michael's and AC Moore's to see what Valentine's supplies are marked down and I'll purchase what I think I can use for next year. This is how I can sell my creations at low prices.
