Can someone please tell me how E*trade works?

I was thinking about trying it out to see if I could make any money with them but since i have never done anything with trading or stocks I wasn't sure how it really works. So I was hoping someone here might be able to tell me how it works? How much you have to invest? Is there a minimum? And how quickly you can put a profit in your pocket? Thanks
