How am I going to pay for this?? (ranty)

So we've been expecting a decent-sized tax refund that we were excited about, and now found out we're not going to get it because of an old student loan issue. Government ate it right up. Waah! Okay, so that's bad enough, because we were depending on it for our rent this month, and our bills, and catching up some things we've been behind on since I didn't work for a huge chunk of last year, and am still working so few hours I pretty much just cover our insurance. The really bad part, however, is that we were counting on it for our trip to Marshfield, WI with our son to see the pediatric neurologist again and get tests done... which is in two weeks. So last minute we're applying to every program we can think of to try to get help with our son's medical stuff, but none of them are really probably going to go through in time, and they only reimburse anyway, so we'd still have to pay up front. We have no one to borrow from, and don't have any clue what we're going to do. We have a ride, but he expects gas money and we'll have to do hotels and food and all that stuff, and we simply don't have it. Have you ever been in a situation where you had something you absolutely had to do but didn't know how you were going to pay for? What did you do? Did you have a total panic attack like I feel like having now, or were you calm and rational about figuring out how to take care of things?

Wow. That's horrible. I have no idea how you are going to pay for it. Have you tried contacting childrens services or family services in your area to see if they can be of any help?

Yeah, it's pretty scary. We're working on the family services thing right now, but they said it takes time to apply and everything, and so we're not sure it's going to go through in time for this trip. We can't really delay it, because of the impact on my son's health, and we already have our time off work and transportation set up, so we're just going to have to figure something out before then. Hopefully the family services stuff will be expedited enough to get it taken care of, but I'm very nervous about it!

I'm freaking out pretty bad, yes. I was so sure that we were going to get the tax refund and take care of everything, and now my mind feels like it's just not working right because that changed. My husband is out running errands right now trying to get stuff figured out in some way, and I wish I could be with him so I'd have something constructive to do, but I had to stay home with Dusty. I already called the landlady to tell her the rent was going to be late and that kind of stuff, but I just don't have anything left to DO that would be useful here. Ugh!

You poor girl. I don't know what I would do if my child needed medical attention and I couldn't get it for them. You must be beside yourself!

That just figures, doesn't it? Do you happen to be on Medicaid for your son. Our Medicaid office gives us gas vouchers for medical appts.. I would also call the Hosp. where you have to go and ask for a social worker. They may have other ideas, and be able to get you a place to stay. Don't give up get on the phone and try. It is so horrible when you get in a spot like that.

I can't remember what diagnosis that you have for your child, do you have anything to do with the MRDD board. If so, they usually have some funds to help parents. Just another idea.

We don't actually have a diagnosis yet. As far as we know, it's some form of seizure disorder, but he hasn't been tested enough for a diagnosis. So far all they've ruled out is febrile seizures, because of the severity of his most recent seizures. Thanks!

We don't have him on Medicaid. We have insurance for him through our work, but it doesn't cover things like that, and we're applying for Medicaid and all that stuff now... but it won't be in time for this trip. Thanks for the suggestion... I'll see who I can get ahold of at the hospital!

I"m so sorry to hear these news. I understand your situation all too well, believe me. It really has happened to us more times than I wished it had. And my first reaction is to panic! Then I start thinking about all the options I already thought about and realized wouldn't work. That said, I have to confess that at last minute we often have found a solution that we had not thought about yet. It doesn't mean that it happens always but maybe it will happen with you as well. ON a more practical side, maybe you can check any community centers close by, a social worker for your area, or even call the hospital where your son will be doing the tests, they often know of ways to help that might apply to your case. Even if your credit is not the best it might be possible to apply for a small loan, the problem with this is that the interest will be much higher, but in the past I have been in a position where even the higher interest had to be acceptable. However by experience I know that this is not the best solution so maybe you should look for the other options first. ANy charitable organizations around? Sometimes they can help as well. If it was summer a yard sale - if you had stuff you could sell - could work, but during winter I am not sure how it would work - This actually worked with us twice and it saved a situation where we weren't able to see any way out. I sincerely hope you can find a way - I actually think that maybe something will happen and you wil find a solution. Big hug to you

Thanks for sharing with me, arkaf! :) There's not much in the way of charity stuff where I live that would apply (I know pretty well since I'm very involved on the giving-and-volunteering side usually) but I'm hoping to find something I hadn't heard of before. Scouring the phone books and talking to people who might know. Wish me luck!

we are in the same boat, we are really struggling financially and are getting a consoladation loan. so that will help. since we have no health coverage, we will be getting some back which will go to pay down some more stuff... doesnt the hospital that you are visiting have a bed and breakfast near by? or perhaps even a ronald mcdonald house (for kids and their parents that are undergoing stuff) best of luck!

I've tried checking into options near the hospital, but haven't had any luck yet. I'm still waiting to hear back from a couple possible leads, though.

Been there done that got the tee shirt. I know that it sounds like I am making lite of it but I know where you are coming from friend. I have been so broke for all of my life. It seems like you scremp and save and still do not have any money. You work your tail off and still have not money. I know we have had to get personal loans in cases like what you are talking about. I am so sorry you have to go through this.

Ok dare I say it- faith and a little luck? When I went through different phases of life and was strapped for cash I would completely panic but somehow everything always worked out. I haven't been in a desperate situation in quite awhile and I can't say that I have been in one that came to being that desperate about the health of my children. Sometimes through these hospitals if you guys are in dire straits and your son is sick enough- :( then there are programs that the hospitals have to help out. It seems that getting there is the problem. Food- I would pack up coolers with what you have around the house and whatever you can find that won't spoil. The gas money wouldn't your ride give you a break if they can. Ask anyone they may know, ask friends, beg if you have to, it's about a child. They are so important and how can people just let that go by? I would help if I could hun...I'm sorry I really don't have any great advice for you. But somehow you and your family will make it- have faith! I know you have that in you- lots of it. Just calm down a little- easy for me to say- I know. Think and have faith in your strong beliefs...Oh goddess....(sorry if I'm wrong about that)

Faith and luck, got it! :P My ride would surely give me a break on gas if he could, but he's actually broke himself at the moment. I'm still thinking on it though, and definitely trying to keep the faith! I have some pretty major spiritual stuff going on this week (to the point where I took a few days of my paid time off at work for it) so maybe I'll get some inspiration there! :)

I wish there was an easy solution for you, but i'm sure if there was you'd have already thought of it. I hope you get some help with the medical stuff through the programs you are applying for. Something similar happened to us last year, although not as severe. We were supposed to move and had a place all lined up, and we were counting on the refund for first and last to the new place, and low and behold, the government decided to give it ALL, over 3 grand of it to my hubby ex for back payments on child support, Even though he was making well over the min payment to pay it off every month. SIgh. so we are still in the same place. and counting on m oney again this year, we hope there is nothing else going to get in the way of moving, we really are running out of space here!

Thanks, Sissygrl! I hope the programs wind up helping me out in time too. :) Eeek, sorry to hear that you had to deal with that! How unfair that they can just keep the money and decide what it has to go to, instead of giving you a chance to make the payments or whatever instead! I hope you get your new place soon!

I'm really sorry this is happening to you. I was disapointed in my refund this year, we too were going to catch up on bills, let's just say that ain't happenin. I have a tendency to panic at first, but once I calm down and sit and work out some kind of solution I feel better.

Thanks for your response. Sorry you were disappointed in your refund too! I was really excited about mine, but then found out we weren't going to get a penny of it! I'm hoping I'll start calming down soon and thinking of solutions too!

You know where I stand, lecanis, so I will tell you what I do, though it is not what you believe. Yes, many times, from getting our electric/water or something turned off to almost losing the house. We are fortunate that most of our health issues in the family is minor and most paid for through where my husbands works.. But when they pressure is on, yeah, sometimes I get that know in my stomach, but I stand on what G♥d says, that He will never leave me nor forsake me. He cares for my every need.. I go to scriptures that tell me what G♥d says about my situation and meditate and pray about it..Then I leave it in His hands, for I am not to worry about tomorrow..I get a peace and sometimes it doesn't work out the way I want it to, (Like having a lot of money dumped into my lap), but it does work out... If you like, I will pray for your situation, I have seen G♥d work miracles, even through the IRS one year..:)

I'm really sorry about your situation. But I have had simillar issues. My husband and I have had things we have to pay for and have no money for it. So we actually borrow, but from family, mostly from my mother. I hate it but it's not often, it has only happend when things have gotten really bad, and believe me we've been thorugh a lot of hell in the money process. Perhaps you could try a loan place, and hopefully they can help you out. I hope your situation gets situated soon. I'll keep you guys in my prayers.

Thanks for keeping us in your prayers. It's great that you can borrow from your mother like that, even if you don't really like doing it. I've always wished I had those kinds of options, but my family doesn't help me out at all, and in fact has stolen money from me in the past. :( I've thought about loans, but my credit is shot, so most places won't give me the time of day. I'll check what's available though!

I had the govt. take a refund for a student loan once when I was first married (and when I needed it the most) and it sucks. I'm like you, I panic in situations like this, but on the upside I think people are much more creative at figuring things out when they are desperate. So keep searching the answer will come to you. Good luck! I'll be thinking of you.
