You buy something and when you pay, your change is a penny. Do you keep it? Why or why not.

Almost never. It usually goes into one of those "need a penny, take one" cups. Why? Because they aren't worth keeping.

I agree that a penny does not buy anything this day and time. (I am old enough to remember penny candy). I do take the penny and put it in a jar of change at home. Once the jar is full, we take the money from it and apply it to something.

I have a jar like that too. I guess there are some pennies in it, but mostly just nickels, dimes and quarters. coins are money, pennies are things you pay 50 cents to watch them get crushed at tourist traps. :~D

HAHA!! I had forgotten about those machines that crush the pennies. My children, who are all grown now, used to love to get one from each place that we visited! We also live near a railroad track that has had more than its fair share of pennies too!

I keep all of my change even the pennies.I have a huge old Heineken bottle that I only put my pennies in and Im anxious to see how much it will have in it when its full.My other change I usually keep to pay the cable bill each month. You will be surprised how much you would have if you save it up for a month.

OMG, I bet your Heineken bottle is the same as ours! Did it originally have popcorn in it? Ours did. We love that old bottle. We keep it out by the counter in the kitchen and we all drop our pennies into it. The last time we cashed them in there was enough money for our first tank of gas on vacation!

I usually dont keep it, cause a penny is not worth nothing but a penny! I know that a penny saved is a penny earned.. but i rarely use cash, so i guess technically if i'm paying with debit i'm keeping all my pennies aren't i ? lol. The only place i really pay for things with cash is the coffee shop cause they dont take debit, and in that case i usually am leaving them a tip, AND MORE THEN A PENNY might i add! lol.

I keep it, because my change jar is an important part of my budget. When my purse starts getting too heavy, I dump all my change in the jar, and then let it build up until there's something I really need to pay with it. Unfortunately I had to cash it in fairly recently, so there's really nothing in it now... but it can be a good way to save for a rainy day.

I sometimes keep the penny but quite often if there's a penny dish layed out I will throw it in because there have been times when you're a penny short and how madening is that when you have to break a 5.00 bill. Here in Canada we no longer have one and two dollar bills and now there's talk they going to do away with the five. Too much change as far as I'm concerned. No wonder everyone uses debit cards. I have a lot of pennies saved in jars actually. I will give them to my Grandchildren because the pennies are no longer made from copper. Thanks.

It depends really. If I am somewhere that has a penny cup like a gas station I usually put it in there. I know there are times that I have taken a penny out, so I try to put some back when I can. A lot of places have those now, but grocery stores do not. When I am at a grocery store and I get a penny back I just put it in my pocket.

If there's one of those 'give a penny/take a penny' jars at the cash register I'll usually just stick it in there. There have only been a couple times when I was short a couple of cents, so I know how much it can mean to somebody else who's short. If there's not one of those, I just stick it into my pocket for the penny jar at home.

Yes, I generally do keep it. We have a jar of pennies. Sometimes we cash in all of our coins, and those pennies do add up. Hubby likes to look for coins of value, too.

I tend to keep it, mainly because toward the end of the month, we end up living out of the change jar. :O) Family of 7, we need all the money that we have. :O)

If i buy something for .99 cents and i give a dollar and they give me the penny back...you are dang right I am going to keep the penny...im sure not going to throw it away because think of it like this...if you have something that cost a dollar and you have to pay lets say five cents tax on it....if you have been keeping those pennies you will have the five cents where had you not been keeping the pennies you wouldn't have the five cents so in the long run it is actually saving you more money if you save that extra penny!

I am not proud I will always keep it, if I see a penny on the floor I will pick it up, we keep an old coffee jar where we put all our coppers in and the money we find. I have found quite a bit, from pennies to fifty pences to even NOTES! They soon mount up, then we count up the money each Christmas and what we have goes towards the Christmas food! Last year we had over £100!!! My grandad always taught me 'Look after your pennies and the pounds look after themselves' how true he was and I always believe in that.

I guess it all depends on the store that I am in. Of course I do need all my pennies now days but if I have gotten a break in a particular store I will try to do the same.

If I pay in cash, I'll usually give it to a charity if there is a collection jar. I truly hate change, it's hard to handle it with cerebral palsy (as I tend to shake).

I keep it...why not?Why wouldn't i?It's mine :) Plus a penny is a penny and it can be useful later or you can save it. There is actually a coin shortage in my country and change has become hard to acquire, so when people are given change here they wouldn't think twice about keeping it...here it's a big deal because you may need it to travel in the bus which have a pretty old system of payment and only accept coins and now stores are hessitant to give out change if you just go buy something for the sake of getting change unlike before...a week or two ago the banks started exchanging coins to remedy this problem because it was getting out of hand. I'd keep it in ANY case! :)

Nah! I just leave it there. It's really worth nothing so why bother at all.
