My dd is only 17 and ended up with kidney stones last week :( Poor thing has been through a lot in the last few years with cancer and other major health problems and now she has to deal with this! One of the meds she is on has the side effect of possible kidney stones and I guess she wasn't drinking enough water...
They haven't passed yet, so she's still in pain. They are giving her a few more days to try to pass them on her own, and if not, we'll take other measures.
Anyone else in their 20's or younger that has had kidney stones? Or known someone that young? They are telling me it's very rare for her to have them.

I had kidney stones in my early 20's and have passed more stones than I can count in my lifetime. They say they are usually hereditary but no one in my family has ever had them. I had them again when I was pregnant and they figured out my body does not make citric acid (which helps prevent them from forming) so I will have to battle them my whole life. It is very painful, I certainly feel for dd. The best thing to do is drink 1-2 liters of water a day and things that are citrus like lemons or limes in the water helps too. I had to have surgery several times at lithrotripsy didn't work for me. Medications can be causes too certainly. Make sure dd sees a urologist.

Thanks. She does have a urologist because the cancer she had was in her bladder... so we have to be really careful about this. I have been pushing her to drink a lot!!! But I'm not with her 24/7 and she is 17, so it makes it hard *sigh*.
No one else in my family has ever had them either, but no one else had cancer either. She's just very rare.
Thanks for the comment!

JUst the way some bodies are made and why are they waiting another week ? are they giving her something to break them up?
My son in law had one in is 30s I thought he was going to have a baby before I got him to the hospital for he sounded like he was in labor/
They gave him something and he passed it the next day but ya do have to make sure she drinks lots and lots of water.
I knew a girl that was 17 and had 32 gallstones took out.
That is rare too. For that young .
am praying for her that all gets out soon hugs to you both!

They want to see if she can pass them on her own. They've given her some pain meds and one for muscle spasms and that has helped the pain...
That's amazing that you knew a young girl with 32 of them! I'm glad to know she's not totally alone in being young and having them...

I got kidney stones the first time in 9th grade and my brother has been getting them since he was 8. He can develop a kidney stone the size of a golf ball in just a couple of hours.
