Do you lock your car doors when you are driving your car?

I have heard two different opinions about the practice of locking car doors and I really am stumped! I drive on a road that is beside a river on many days. A lot of people say that if one plunges into a body of water with the doors locked, the water will lend the mechanism to unlock the doors useless. I don't think I would have the strength to kick out a window and there is nothing in my car to use to break a window! Others say that one should drive with the doors locked at all times for safety reasons. Both make sense to me! What do you do and why?

My car locks the doors for me when I put it into gear! But I'd lock it, anyway. When I get in the car I immediately lock the doors just in case someone is waiting to grab my purse or something. I recently read an article on surviving a plunge into water and it said that the very first thing you should do is roll down the window if you can. You should get a hammer or one of those special hammers designed to break a car's window. Keep it in the glove compartment or anywhere you can easily get to it. Even a very strong person has difficulty breaking a car's window from the inside.

My husband usually drives our car and when I am with him driving here in the city, I usually lock the car door on my side. There are many reported cases of snatching mobile phones, bags, jewelries, so I am just cautious and for safety reason I lock the door. When we are driving in the countryside when we go to our home province, I dont lock the door and we open the car window. The reason is that the road is zigzag and there are high cliffs. It is just a precaution that when an accident happen, we can easily get out of the car if the door is not locked or with an open window.

I lock my doors. But we don't drive near bodies of water. That puts a new spin on things. My mother lives in South Florida. They have canals all over the place. I don't know what the device is called. But they sell this little hammer to break you window with in case you have an accident and your car goes in to the water. It's kept in the glove box.

I never lock the doors of my car coz my father never did it either and I have the same habit. He didn't locked it because he thought that in case of an accident he could escape from the car easily. I think I do this for the same reasons, maybe. But when I'm parked somewere and I wait someone in the car I lock the doors in case some robber has the idea to put me out of the car and steal it.

My car automatically locks when I reach a certain speed. However, in the past I always locked the doors manually for safety.

I always lock my doors because when I was a little girl and we drove through town my mother would say, "Lock your doors or some weirdo will open the door and kidnap you when I pull up to a stop sign!" As for the river, I'd suggest one of those little hammers too. They are said to be very handy.

I do lock doors while driving.I do it because otherwise there is a high chance that the door can get opened and we be ousted from the seat.also when the door suddenly opens,it can also cause accidents.so for safe driving,i prefer locking the door.

I don't live anywhere near any large bodies of water. I do keep my car doors closed when driving however. They automatically lock, whether I want them to or not, anyway. Even if they did not, I would want them locked. I think the dangers of someone jumping into the car with someone outweigh the risks of running off into a body of water.

I lock my doors if I feel like I am in a place that is dangerous. If I have to stop a lot at intersections. If your car goes into the water you are not going to have the strength to open the door against the rising water whether it is locked or not. I think you would have enough adrenaline to push out the window.

No I don't because I have also heard the pros and cons. Many years ago I was driving down a lonely country road in North Africa and an Arab jumped out of nowhere and pulled open the door I did manage to shake him off by driving like a maniac. I did drive with the door locked for a long time after that but now I would rather takes my chances rather than be trapped inside after an accident.

I don't. I think it's a rather strange practice personally. I mean, unless you are in a rather shady part of town, I don't see any point to locking your doors. It's not like people can randomly run up to your car while you are driving and jump in. That really only can happen if you're stopped.

if you're sunk in that water, the pressure on the other side of the door will make trying to open it - useless. you would be best to keep a wrench or club inside your car for breaking a window if need be. which is more likely to occur? an assault or a sinking? my doors automatically lock when I get up to around 10mph.

I don't drive often and prefer my husband to take the wheel more. But every time we're in the car, I make sure all the doors are locked. See, here in the Philippines, there have been so many incidences already of criminals attempting to open car doors during traffic and robbing the owners. As a certified paranoid mom, I fear for my family's safety more than anything. Luckily too, we don't fear plunging in a body of water because there are not so many of those here in the city where we live :)

My car locks as soon as it starts moving. I think most of them do now. I do not in my conversion van, I don't even think about it.

i don't drive but whenever i'm riding a car, i always make it sure that i lock the doors, at least the door near me. i don't think of falling into the river but i think of danger from carjackers and the likes that might force open the car doors force us to give everything we have or do something bad to us.

Only when we go through a bad area or a high crime area. My Brothers car automatically locks the doors when the engine is started. **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~

Actually, if your cars enters a body of water, there's a good chance you won't be able to open your door - whether the locks work or not. The water will exert pressure against the door making it very difficult or almost impossible to open. Your best bet is get out through the window (because it simply rolls down instead of working against the pressure of the water). The first thing you are supposed to do if you hit a body of water is roll down your windows. That's your best and easiest way out. I think it's safer to drive with your doors locked. That's why a lot of cars automatically lock the doors once you start driving.
