To me, alienation means to be totally cut off from something or someone. Like a cut off of contact or ties to something. Like: her family alienated her would mean that the family desires no more contact from them, or that contact has been lost. Another example, they used to have grounds for divorce on 'alienation of affection,' which would mean that the person claiming alienation of affection's spouse wasn't being close in their marriage (physically or mentally.) That person wasn't 'there' for them because of outside sources or factors (whether it's a health factor, or a cheating spouse factor.) Anyways, that's how I interpret it.

For me alianation is simply being forced in to the wrong relationship with something. For example a person becomes alianated from the work process by not being in control of it. This in turn leads to a state of anomie or normlessness.
hope this helps

It a noun
1. the feeling of being alienated from other people
2. separation resulting from hostility
3. (law) the voluntary and absolute transfer of title and possession of real property from one person to another: "the power of alienation is an essential ingredient of ownership"
4. the action of alienating: the action of causing to become unfriendly
Hope that helps!

Oh, lovely, I'm studying sociology now - alienation, according to Mr. Marx, is when a worker feels separated, emotionally, physically, all -ally's, from what he or she is producing. For instance, if you are an office worker, you could feel alienated when you're forced into a routine and hard work, so that everything feels like a difficult, painful ritual. Alienation is your separation from something that you should not be separated from.

The best example I can give is to ask you to remember back to grade school. Do you remember the one kid who always played alone on the play ground? The one kid who never had any friends? The one kid who was always excluded from group activities or picked last in gym class? That is alienation. To set someone apart from a group or a project.
