I have a rat terrior named Buster...He is now 12 yrs old. He developed cataracts and now is completely blind. He is also diabetic. He takes insulin shots twice a day. Other than these two major problems he is basically in good shape. I also have a black pug...her name is Pudgie. She doesnt have any health issue so far that Im aware of. I was just curious as to whether any one else had a dog that was blind or diabetic.

My dad's dog is blind (from cataracts). She is only 2! But boy, she is so high strung, you can't tell that she is blind, she gets around quite well. :O)

Half the time we wonder if buster is actually blind cause u really cant tell. Now, if we move something that he is used to....u can tell then or if there is no light making a shadow u can tell....other than that...he seems to be fine

Personally no I have not. But when I was in high school my best friend had a cat that was diabetic. His name was Muffin. And they did keep up with the shots. But Muffin, soon after being diagnosed took a turn for the worse. Sounds like Buster is healthier than that. Good job.

Aww, poor Buster, and you, the work involved in caring for this dog must be very hard.. My sister many years ago had a blind poodle, but after seeing the poor thing bumping into too many things, she decided to put her down. As for the diabetic part, well I guess it is like people, as long as you keep his sugar level at a certain number and watch what he eats, then he should be good.. I did have a deaf dalmatian before. She was born that way, but I trained her and other than a few things I couldn't do with her, you never knew she couldn't hear..

we had thought about puttin him down but he is rally basically healthy. His diabetes dont slow him down and his blindness so far hasnt been too big of an issue...maybe cause it came on slow and he has adjusted pretty well. It is expensive tho....the shots and the vet appts and the blood checks...blah

Oh yeah, I am sure it is expensive.. As for putting the dog down, I forgot to say, that my sister also waited, I think years before the decision, it wasn't until the dog was getting hurt, because she was also getting very old. So she didn't put her down right away, so it sounds like your dog will be around for many more years..:)
