Are there rally cars with both transmission?
It would be nice to use automatic in traffic and manual when you want to run!

Yea, Rowena, as you said, here in America the vast majority of vehicles come standard with automatic transmissions. but most sports car enthusiasts and off road vehicle drivers prefer manual or stick shift transmissions. I am too old to be interested in putting on a show or working any harder than I have to, so I definitely drive an automatic.

But don't you love the feel of driving with your right hand on the gear? :)

Oh absolutely! I have a Caddy Seville with a center console and a four speed automatic tranny that can be shifted like a manual or stick shift without the drawback of a clutch. The gear shift has a super smooth round walnut handle which feels awesome in my hand. Its really sexy, if you get what I mean.

I prefer car with manual gear and the car I currently use is using manual gear. I always consider that I rather be a controller than a person who is controlled by the machine. Also I don’t feel bored when driving as I could change the gear I wish at anytime. But I find a bit difficult to get new car with manual gear nowadays as most of the brand new cars are equipped with automatic gears.

I'm with you.
It' strange that in a lot of country they are obsessed with automatic gear. Here instead an automatic is seen as a "gear for dummies"

My wife and I share a car so it has to be automatic because she cannot drive a manual transmission yet. However, when I owned cars in the past they were usually manual. I enjoy the ease of the automatic transmission, especially when driving over large mountain grades here in California, but the feel and control of manual transmissions have always made me feel comfortable. If I had to choose one, it would more than likely be a manual.

In both my car and my husband's truck it is automatic transmission. Good thing too because I never learned to drive a manual! :P My husband would love me to learn as he knows how to drive a manual transmission, but I'd be too worried that I'd grind gears and whatnot. I'd be a nervous wreck! LOL So I'll just stick with an automatic. Maybe one day I'll learn, but for now I'll stick with what I'm comfortable with. :)

Well, I'd find it difficult if my husband were yelling at me for doing it all wrong! :P LOL Though if I knew for a fact he wouldn't jump down my throat I'd be more willing. But we don't have anything for me to learn on anyway, so it is out of the question for now.

I know the feeling. When I was driving the first times my father yelled me the whole time. You have to ignore him like I did :D

Learn, it's not so difficult! The only difficulty is to learn WHEN to change but even if you don't change often it's not a big deal

Manual transmissions get better overall gas mileage and can actually be better in avoiding a potential accident if the driver is skilled enough.
I personally like automatics better. I never have to worry about burning out a clutch or having one less hand then I need while I'm driving.

Yeah the manual gear can save your life: a friend of mine couldn't break (a problem on wheels) and he slowed down the car by switching to the first gear.

Why do you think manual is better?
Automatic transmissions are best in crowded cities.
If you have to stop and start frequently or if you brake frequently, then you probably need to change gears often.
In this case AT is much better...
I like AT better, much easier to drive your car....

Maybe I prefer manual coz I want the feeling *TO HAVE THE POWER*.
And I feel more in charge of the car, without depending on a mechanism who can fail.

I have always had automatic gears. I am very used to them and have no desire to have manual. I am not saying that manual gears are not good. I am just used to the others. My husband has manual gears and was willing a few years back to teach me. I didn't want to learn because I would not have driven his truck any way. If something had gone wrong he would have claimed it was my fault. So I am a automatic gears person and always will be.

Yes, back in Europe most cars are manual gear, and we learn in them, get used to it and end up preferring it.
In here it's the opposite, most cars are automatic.
Our first and second cars were manual, this last one is automatic - we didn't have much choice at that time . I am afraid that even though I did have my license back home I never got it in here - there was always something else more important that needed to be done with that money. But my preference still goes to manual. So does hubby's.

I don't drive any more but when I did I never learned to use a manual transmission. My Dad wasn't happy about that because he said manual cars were easier to fix but I went ahead and never learned.

I'm using Fiat Multipla diesel version with auto-transmission gear. I like it very much because and its auto shifting from one ratio to another is very swift with no jerking feeling. I prefer auto-transmission rather than manual. For my next car in future, I will take for auto and will never for manual as I hate manual-gear-transmission.
Happy Postings and Earnings, RowenaTheWitch.
HAPPY DAPPY.

I have a Prius so I have no alternative to an automatic. That said, I love the car (OK it does look a bit boring) and get great Miles per Gallon with the simplicity of the automatic. I strongly recommend that people make up their own minds. Personally, I shall be tempted by another automatic when the time comes to trade the car in.

Manual gear is not really difficult to learn. If you can drive with automatic then the only think you have to learn is when to change. You have to listen to the motor, it makes some noises when it wants the change (it's like a baby :D )
