Recently Me and my female best friend went halves on a cow. LOL!! We got half a cow and split it between us we ended up with 80lb of ground hamburger which give us about 40lbs of ground burger each... If you had that much ground burger what would you do with it besides put it in your deep freeze ofcourse... What types of meals would you make with it?

LOL i didn't kill it, but i went to bed really soon after that so that i didn't want to throw it outta the window.. oh wait.. i have no window big enough. ok.. anyways on with the re-poST! So i would make: Sgetti, MEATBALLS for sure, Goulash, hamburger helper, cassaroles of different types, meatballs again, and maybe some more meatballs! lol i really like meatballs ;) I WOULDn't make: MEATLOAF!! lol there is a story behind this. My MIL and FIL came to visit us when we first moved up there.. (they live approx. 200miles away, thank god, ((sorry hunny if you read this your mom drives me nuts)) ) And she decided before we went to work to tell my hubby that she was making him his FAVOURITE meal for dinner for when he came home. WELL. he came home expecting steak and scalloped potatoes i think!! she got the potatoes right, but he had MEATLOAF waiting for him!!! He doesn't even really like meatloaf, and i sure dont either. LOL. We ate it to be polite and we were hungry!! So we didn't mention it untill they had gone home and i was talking to FIL a few months later and decided it was old news and maybe we could share a laugh over it, and we did. At MIL expense. lol. i dont think she thought it was too funny but FIL and i did ;)

Well, I would say what a shame to grind up good meat. Not that ground beef is not good, of course, but I would have had the best steaks off it first and the tougher cuts made into stewing beef. That way you get a bit of variety and make the best of the flavour. I would make a variety of things in suitable portions with it and freeze them as ready meals. The following would be my favorites, off the top of my head. 1) Plain burgers 2) Stilton or blue cheese burgers 3) Cottage pie 4) Bolognese sauce 5) Chili con carne 6) Meatballs (in a lemon sauce or any kind of sauce, really) 7) Greek sausages (Kofte) 8) Cornish pasties (which really should be chopped meat, not ground) 9) Rolypoly (suet pastry filled with a ground meat and vegetable mixture and preferably steamed) 10) Beef sausages I must say that, since the slaughter weight runs from around 700lbs for a small heifer to 1500 lbs for a large steer, to only get 80lbs of meat off half an animal sounds a little thin. I realise that bone and sinew and other stuff is not edible (though a lot of it goes for dog and cat food) but it sounds as if your butcher did pretty well out of the deal!

yeah the cow was only about 300 lbs but 80lbs was ground beef and then we got alot of roasts and steaks. 72lbs of roasts and easily 40llbs of soup bones and 48lb of tbones .. that is rough estimate. so I would have to aggree that the butcher did an awesome job and thanks for the ideas I appreciate it. LOL!! have a nice day.

I would make a lot of recipes out of it, from burgers to meatballs. There's also a simple meal appropriate for that, I only use diced potatoes and soy sauce. I'll just saute the meat with garlic and onion, then put a 1/2 or a cup of water and pour in some soy sauce. I could also turn that into, picadillo. This recipe is famous on Latin American countries, as we have a different version of that here as well. I could also turn it into spring rolls, add it as a filling for wanton soups and many more..

Wow that's a lot of beef! Did you get like steaks too? Yumm. I love beef, I've always wanted to do that but living in an apartment with a tiny fridge... it's a no go. Ok I would make a bunch of burgers to freeze from this awsome recipe I got. I would fix the meat for a new spagetti sauce recipe I found. I would mix the meat to make empanadas. Umm... loose meat sandwiches, meatloafs of different kinds, chili, stuffed cabbage, meatballs... basically all kinds of things that you can make ahead for those days when you only have time to heat and eat. If you go to www.kraftfoods.com they have amazing recipes, I've been using their Healthy Living recipes for 2 weeks now and we've never eaten better or tastier than we do now!

Thanks Gmakesmoney I'll have to check out that website. We also got T-bones, raosts and many other things. I'll be eating beef for about a month now LOL!!! It's nice to only have to get sides instead of the main dish and it came out to 1.59 per pound which have you ever seen a T-bone for 1.59 a pound. I think this is going to be my preferred way of buying meat from now on. LOL!!!!

Wow that's an amazing price!!! Hmmm... that might be worth buying an extra freezer for. We're always looking for ways to save on our groceries, surprsingly groceries in AL are super expensive. It takes us about $250 to feed 2 people per month if we stick to a tight budget! Meanwhile back home in MA where the cost of living is double, my best friend spends $150 a month feeding 3 people. We have so many all natural and organic meat farms in the state, I bet something like that would be worth it. Oh and yeah those recipes are awsome and you can make them all your own by subsituting things, which is what I do. Their made over cheese buger I turned into a bruscetta burger like the one at Applebee's by using bruscetta, 2% mozzarella, romain lettuce (healtheir than regular lettuce which has no nutrients at all), whole wheat buns and instead of the miracle whip in the meat I used A1 sauce the zesty one made for burgers. I made it with their unfried French Fries except I put them standing in a little coffee cup with olive oil and sprinkled shaved parmesean over them after placing them in the cup instead of using shredded while cooking. OMG... soooooo yummy!

I've thought about getting a cow too. We use a good bit of hamburger in our family. We eat hamburger helper, make tacos and I have quite a few recipes that call for hamburger. I have like 20 different cookbooks, I'm sure I could find something to make.

I have 4 kids and a grown man and a step brother living with me and I couldn't use that much ground beef before it would get freezer burned. I like the idea of splitting a cow though. I'm sure it is so much cheaper then going to buy steaks and roasts when they are like $5-$8 a pound. I would need 4 other people to go in with me though.

Are you sure you would need four other people to go in with you? because I have a family not much bigger than yours and the half of cow will probably last me a month and a half. Also if you wrap it properly you shouldn't end up getting and freezer yuck. LOL!!!

I'd make 15 pounds of it into half pound burgers right away and freeze them. Then I would make a couple of meat loaves and freeze them. Then i would package up some more into 1lb packs for manwhich and hamburger helper. But HOLY COW! really!
