My Cholesterol is Very High!

Yesterday I discovered that
I had very high cholesterol. It
was 7.3, which normally is the level at which medication is prescribed. To be honest, I was surprised because I eat a fairly good diet.
I told my Doctor how my husband had been diagnosed with diabetes about ten days ago, & that we were trying to follow a diabetes diet. We are seeing a nurse next tuesday to talk about my husbands diet.
So my Doctor thought it okay for me to try the diabetes diet to lower my cholesterol.
I have another check up in three months time & if there is no sign of my cholesterol level lowering, I will have to go on medication.
So far I have bought Omega 3 fish oil capsules, which reportedly assists in lowering cholesterol. I also purchased Logical margarine, which can help lower cholesterol by 10%.
So any ideas & low cholesterol recipes would be welcome from My Lotters.

I eat a bowl of some kind of cheerios every day for breakfast. My cholesterol has never been high and I thought that was strange because I eat red meat like 5 times a week. But try the cheerios for breakfast. It certainly couldn't hurt.

I dont eat any kind of cereal, mainly because I hate all forms of milk. Dry cereal is a bit bland.
Thanks for your comments.

I guess all I can do is to let you know which food has more cholesterol.. Cholesterol is found in eggs, dairy products, meat, poultry, fish, and shellfish. Egg yolks and organ meats (liver, kidney, sweetbread, brain) are particularly rich sources of cholesterol. High-fat dairy products, meat, and poultry all have similar amounts of cholesterol. Fish generally has less cholesterol, but shellfish varies in cholesterol content. Foods of plant origin, like fruits, vegetables, grains, cereals, nuts, and seeds, contain no cholesterol. So I guess it would be better if you do eat less on the meat and dairy products and more on fruits and veggies. Hope this helps.:)

You have confirmed what I am hearing so far.
I am a big egg eater (usually boiled), & sometimes have fatty meat (to suit the kids).
I dont drink milk but do eat cheese.
I am going to try to go more towards the salad, vege & fruit type meals, even though my husband is allergic to some of those.

Other things that people find helpful are eating oatmeal regularly, and cinnamon. Niacin is supposed to help, but watch out for the flushing effect. The other thing you need to look at is your ration of HDL to LDL, it may be better than you think. I do not think that in the US we express our cholesterol numbers the same as you do in Australia, so I am not getting a good grasp of what your 7.3 relates to in my experience.

The results say the ratio of LDL to HDL is 3.0.
Also says the ratio of Chol to HDL is 5.6.
Total chol is 7.3.
There are other figures there too.
They have a ratiung tyupe chart, & chol over 7.0 requires the use of medication.

Yes, you want the HDL to LDL ratio to be 4 or greater. I hope that something here helps.

Mine is too. I don't know what the exact numbers are but my doctor put me on Crestor. He said it's due to age and I'm only 43. Hubby and I aren't fond of our doctor anyway but we have to see him or we'll have to change to one that's 10 miles further or we'll have to pay more thanks to our insurance. Such is life. Oh la la.

I am nearly 50 & my Doctor said my high cholesterol is probably due to genetics.
I expect I will end up on medication, but I am going to try & lower it via natural means first.

Check the American Diabetes Assoc. on web asthey probably have recipes for diabetes and also for people with cholesterol problems I eat oatmeal every day for breakfast, take vitamins andcalcium and iron and flaxseed oil and fish oil omega 3 and 6 which are supposed to lower chlosterol. My cholosterol levels are great which I am thankful for as I haveso many meds I must take as it is.Iwonder if stress ever upsets cholosterol levels as it does my blood glucose levels.

So far I am taking fish omega oil capsules three times each day. I bought the cholesteral lowering margarine & bread.
I have read quite a bit the oatmeal is good, the problem being that I am not keen on milk with brekky cereal.

You may eat oatmeal in the morning and eat more vegetables
and avoid red meats. When cooking don't fry instead boil, broil and
grill the food to have less fats on the food.

A cholesterol calculator can be used to determine your cholesterol levels.

Get a good amount of vitamic C in your system and try to stick to whole grain products.
Omega 3 is excellent, keep those sources of healthy fats going.
You should see some great results
