what makes a dem a good dem or a rep a good rep

I'm a member of the Republican Party, but at times I have felt my party strays from the ideals that originally attracted me to that party. In cases like that, I would switch. I also feel that the ability to think and act freely is what makes me a good Republican. What do ya'll think?
