Passenger restrictions for probationary drivers will be introduced as part of the Victorian Government's new road safety program.
First year probationary drivers will only be able to have one passenger, aged between 16 and 21, with them from July.
The strategy also includes tougher drink driving laws and mandatory safety technology in new cars.
The Government had previously opposed limiting passengers for probationary drivers.
But announcing the new Arrive Alive strategy today, the Victorian Premier, John Brumby said he had been persuaded to adopt the measure.
"When you look at all of the the evidence in this area it is overwhelming," he said.
There will also be more drug and alcohol testing for Victorian drivers.
I think it is about time.
It is common place in Sydney to see a car pack with young people acting irresponsibly like the teenagers they are. They are a danger to themselves and an accident about to happen.
As for...
Electronic stability control and side curtain airbags will become mandatory in all new cars over the next two to three years.
While this will protect them for themselves... it won't teach them to drive a car. On the contrary... it has the opposite effect. It teaches people to fully relies on the car rather than learning to control the car.

On the whole, I think the new restrictions are a good thing, but all the legislation in the world will never replace common sense and education. By education, I do not mean school based, or Driver's Ed, I mean the education gained by children from their parents. Before us kids could even think about learning to drive, my dad talked constantly to us about the road rules, signage, linemarkings, weather conditions...etc., anything that occurred incidentally as we took trips. When I was learning to drive, my Dad was our resriction. We were not allowed to drive a car over 6 cylinders, and we were not allowed to take more than 2 friends with us - or we lost our car privileges. I know times have changed, but every day I thank my dad for his teaching. We now do the same for our children, talking to them as we drive about incidental things that pop up in the course of our trips.

I know where you are coming from.
I was taught the road rules before being let loose on a bicycle at age 12. I proceeded to a motorbike and then a car.
I am 56... and still waiting to have my first accident. laugh

hello there to U...well, new restrictions for young drivers is a good thing...it will teach those young people to be a responsible one...they will learn to be more responsible like as driving their own cars...because there are those people out there who weren't responsible enough...i am not saying in general, but when it comes to driving, they should learn to take responsibility because there are also innocent people out there who will become poor victims because of their irresponsible acts like drinking while driving or something else...so i think, new restrictions laws should also be implemented in our country too as well, which i think our Government is doing their really best when it comes to road's safety, thank GOD...i think in everything we do, whether walking or driving, we should pray to GOD always and trust in HIM...and HE will be our safe guidance...have a blessed day ahead of U...may GOD BLESS U & UR family always!!!
