Have you traced your family history?

I am working hard to trace my family history in the UK. So far I have got back to 1687, but I think that if I try hard enough I might get back even further. Have you any experience of tracing your family. What did you do that helped? and what went wrong? Love to hear.

How did you go about tracing your history? I have no idea where to start. I know that my maternal grandfathers family was from India but ended up changing their last name. I know what the original last name was but I have no idea how to spell it and that side of the family didn't keep in touch because my grandfather didn't marry the same race.
