School board members have lost it!

Here in Kenosha Unified School District, the school board members seem to be out of their minds lately. We had a day of 4 inches of snow about a month ago, and they gave us a snowday. Well, we were happy then. But now, they have had many complaints about that day. Yesterday we had a snowstorm which gave us 12 inches of snow, and it was VERY dangerous outside. Accidents EVERYWHERE, every other car stuck, broken down, or in the ditch. Well, we didnt have school. They are really getting it mixed up. And now, this morning they put an announcment out that school will be starting two hours later than normal. Why?! The plows have all been through, the ice has melted, everything looks great. They're just trying to satisfy the parents complaining about the snow days by putting kids in school, and the parents complaining about NOT having snow days by keeping us out for half a day. How insane is that?! It's so hecktic because the busses are messed up, the ones that can run wont because they're confused on who is going where and when, so parents have to miss work to run their kids around town figuring out when school starts. They said in the announcement "approximately two hours" later is when school will start. I can just see it now, people being 10 minutes late and kids getting marked tardy. Parents are none too happy. Would you be if this were the situation with your school system?

No, I wouldn't be happy. Me, being a parent of a school-going child, would not be thrilled over that. 4" of snow isn't so dangerous, unless the icetrucks didn't get out in time. Then, I could see a delay, not the whole day off. I can see calling off on the day w/ 1' of snow. If the school didn't know when they were starting, I would just take my child there and figure it out in person. Did you know that when they delay school, the teachers/staff still have to be at the school at the usual time? that's because not all parents will get the message about school being delayed, and they can't refuse the kid after the parents drop them off. anyway. it sounds like the school has no backbone. the school needs to do what they think is best for the kids, and some of the parents will just have to suck it up. You can't please everyone.

our school system never starts late...we either have school or not and then if the weather is not the best and school is still on, its up to the parents. so far this year we have had about 3 storms but only one school cancelation...but hey, we are tough canadians!!!!!!

wow, i almost flipped when i saw what you were talking about... i live in kenosha county, and i am amazed to see you here! what a snow storm it was. kenosha unified hardly ever shuts schools down. the reason being is that the city has a lot of kids walking and able to get there. when the temps are so cold, below 0, then they have justification to shut. in the county, the buses generally are the decision makers,, they don't want to run, we dont have school. its ashame that parents rely on schools to run so that they can work. but, the schools have a responsibility also., and need to follow through to which the parents should just "get over it".. its winter in wisconsin, and this is how it used to be all the time 20 years ago... the only difference is that parents did not both work, usually one stayed home,, so therefore, the babysitters were not as necessary! Good to hear from a fellow kenosha person!!!

wow, awesome! lol, yeah the busses have been a huge problem. several broken down, a few slid into ditches, and at Bradford Highschool aparently there was a big bus accident. Some people were talking about "If the boy doesnt live there will be a big lawsuit" but I didnt get any details. So yeah, good to hear from another k-town resident!

Personally, if the weather is bad in the morning or is suppose to get worse I don't send my children. A parent is the one who should decide if it is dangerous to send their children to school.

I Know EXACTLY what your talking about. I was just going to start a discussion about this! LOL! For the last week it has been raining non stop here. Well yesterday they had a 2 hour delay over the rain! What are the kids going to float away? LOL. Now this morning I woke up to 2 inches of snow. They have school! Now wait a minute. It was raining then snowed so all that rain froze. Isnt that dangerouse? I really think the people on the school board need to rethink this!! They are off there rockers for sure!!

haha yeah, sounds like a mess just like here. The roads here are getting a bit better but some smaller ones arent even getting plowed, and ones that are arent getting done well because they just pack the snow down even more. its a very heavy snow, hard to lift. just like the country's economy, the education system is said to be goin down too.

Fortunately we don't have to deal with this in the Phoenix, AZ area. I think all school systems are to the point that they are trying to please all the parents. That's just not going to happen. They should make a policy and stick with it. I personally wouldn't do late start, just because it does confuse things. There should either be school or not. If it is dangerous for school to start at the regular time they should call a snow day. Otherwise the kids should go to school as normal. Then again, I am a VERY routine oriented person so that probably sways my thinking quite a bit!
