Do you know anybody who can't read or write?

This morning while sitting in the doctor's office, I saw an elderly gentleman walk over to the nurses station. After some conversation, the nurse handed him some forms and told him that these forms needed to be completed before they saw his wife. The man then told the nurse he couldn't read or write and that he would have to take the forms home with him. I began thinking how horrible it would be if you couldn';t read or write, in fact I wouldn't be on line now. In most states you couldn't get a drivers license, you would be exempt from a lot of jobs, almost everything you buy comes with instructions or warning labels and the list goes on. If you know someone like this, how do they manage?

I don't know anyone that can't read or write at all but I know a few that have trouble reading and spelling. My Mom is one that has problems spelling and she will call me up and ask me how to spell words. I don't mind b/c I know she had to quit school early b/c she was helping raise her younger sister and brother. I learned to read when I was 4, my Mom actually taught me :) I have always loved to read b/c I can escape into all kinds of places and do all sorts of things. It's been my crutch through bad times and my vacations in good times. **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~

It's ashame that young people today don't read more instead of watching the TV or on the computer. I also enjoy reading, in particular suspense novels and books about WW2. I often wonder how Hitler and his croonies stayed in power especially after people realized what a fanatic/sadistic killer he was. If only a few more people had the ba_ _ s to take action.

Yes unfortunelty I have an aunt who doest not read or write. She waits for one of us to come over and read her mail- and also fill out any forms for her. It is sad- but she grew up in a day and age where it wasn't important for a women to get an education- she was taught to keep house in stead- how we have evolved -thank goodness :)

You're absolutely right. I know that a long time ago on the farm, the boys would get a 4th-5th grade education but after that he was needed on the farm. The girls would get less and they were needed to take care of all the other children and help in the house.

Most ppl I know can read and write...some more than others but all of them to some degree. My Mom has trouble spelling and doesn't like to read but is a whiz at math. I can read at high college levels and don't have very many problems spelling but I suck at math. I have a cousin that reads and writes and does math at about a 5th grade level. With my Mom and I we help each other out...she calls me if she needs help spelling something and I call her if I have a math problem...it works out.
