Does anyone know how to make their own crochet patterns?

I too have crocheted for years, ok years and years, but I don't use patterns. I actually learned by watching a high school friend and just kinda figured it out from there. I mainly stick to afghans and pillows but have been selling these online for almost 2 years and doing good business - sometimes more than I would like.
Opps back to topic - it's funny you posted this because yesterday I was thinking of trying to write up my own pattern and try selling that for those who prefer to make their own.

Oh wow, you actually sell your stuff? Do you really get enough to account for the time you put into it? I tried to sell a few things years ago, but people never wanted to pay a reasonable amount so I gave up on that. Some people actually tried to offer less than the yarn had cost!
I've looked for books or websites on pattern making, but all I ever find are collections of trims and afghan squares. What I really want most is to learn how to create my own sweater patterns. I'm a big girl, and I have a hard enough time adjusting patterns to make it into a larger size. Sometimes the proportions just don't work out when you get to trying to set in the sleeves and then I end up ripping out a lot. I've learned to make the sleeves first so I have a guide when decreasing to make the armholes!

Yes, I do sell them. Until 2 years ago I just made afghans for friends and family - everyone in my family has at least 1 and some more, Mom is on her 3rd but actually still has the very first one I ever made (she wanted one and that was why I learned to crochet to make one for her for Christmas).
No, I don't get my 'time' back but I love crochetting, it's relaxing for me and I usually do it while I'm watching TV. I normally sell a baby afghan and matching pillow for $50. The one I'm just finishing up was a custom order and the lady paid me $65 for the set which isn't even done yet but she sent me the money already.

That's great! I think I might try this again. I'm running out of people to give afghans to also. I get excited when somebody gets pregnant because I have a gift to make! If I could really sell them it would be wonderful because I could make so much more.
