Did You Ever Borrow Those Cute Little Bottles On A Permanent Basis?

I have a silly little question for you. When you were traveling and you had the opportunity to stay in a hotel/motel room did you ever take the little shampoo, conditioner bottles, coffee packets, toilet paper, towels or anything else? I have an uncle that has a bathroom completely stocked with these kind of items. Have you done this?

Not towels, toilet paper, the robe or the leather folder for the stationary... Taking those things is considered stealing. But as a hotel guest, the soaps, shampoo, conditioner, body lotion (those little bottles), as well as the coffee packets and other comestibles are cconsidered amenities that are yours for the taking. So is the stationary. Be careful about raiding the minibar. You'll pay dearly. And don't forget to leave a tip for housekeeping : about $2 per night. I like to leave a little note of thanks as well.

Dear Kbourgerie, I think those things are discretionary... I like to leave a tip because the people in housekeeping work extremely hard, most of them are struggling parents and for the most part have very low salaries. I like to leave a note for three reasons: One, because it lets the person know that the two dollars on the table is a gratuity. Two, because the person can collect an album of thank you notes to help get promoted. And three, to feel a human connection :-)

That is extremely thoughtful of you and something I think most people don't consider.

I agree with you, but I don't think I've ever left a tip for housekeeping or a note of thanks.

I didn't take them, but I do use the shampoo now that they make it so hard to pack liquids in your carry on. I do not carry stuff like shampoo and soap anymore, so I use what is in the hotel. I do not drink coffee so their coffee is safe from me.lol I hate the smell of the stuff. Their towels are nothing special so why would anyone want to steal them anyway. If you can afford to stay at a hotel that has good enough towels to steal, then you probably have beter towels at home. Too funny! Shalom~Adoniah

Well maybe some people just want new towels or perhaps they use them to wrap something in, who knows?

I don't pack stuff either anymore. As far as the towels go, one time I took one. My daughters and I were at a hotel with an outdoor pool. When we got there, it was raining and they couldn't go swimming. The next day before we left, the pool was open. They begged me to let them go. So before I put their suits in the suitcase, I wrapped them in a fresh towel. They never let me forget it either. "daddy stole a towel from the hotel" they always say. LOL

As I pack my own favorite shampoo for traveling and use it, I do indeed take the individual bottles and safe them to use as "stocking stuffers" to slip in nooks and crannies when sending birthday packages, especially to friends who reciprocate. We use all sorts of strange things for packing material. Once dear friend put a box of sandwich bags in one care package she sent to us and they were a kind I'd never used before and liked a lot. We learn new things this way. It is great fun, and the individual containers are meant for us to use. I would never steal the towels though or anything that was not meant to be used during the stay. I toss the clean disposable cups in my bag to use along the way, but would never take a glass or a roll of toilet paper or anything like that. Oh, mea culpa, I take the disposable laundry bag, too, even though we don't have the hotel do personal laundry service for us. We use it to put our worn clothes in to keep the suitcase fresh. I think that is something they should provide and it is easier to keep the laundry separated when it is in a bag with the hotel's name on it.

I have relatives that do the same thing. Give those items as stocking stuffers. You had some really good ideas in your response. Thanks. And you are right too, like about the sandwich bag incident. I had an aunt give me a box of practical "stuff" for Christmas one year, but I'll tell you what every single item got used, unlike a pair of socks I may never wear.

Always. I might never end up using them. But who knows. After all, that is what they are there for...right?

If they are there, I take them. Isn't that why a room costs soo much now.

I can't say that I have because the hotels/motels I have stayed in didnt come with these things lol. The only stuff like that we had to bring ourselves. Well it come with 1 roll of toilet paper, if you run out you have to go to the desk and get more. Towels they write down when they bring you towels and they want that many when you check out or they are making you pay. I guess I'm staying in the wrong hotels lol

Maybe the hotels you stayed in were more pay by the week and then often, yes, they don't supply the extras.

I actually laughed out loud when you called my uncle frugal. You have no idea. This man is the epitome of frugal. He reuses paper towels. When he goes to Mexico he would rather walk than pay a quarter for a donkey ride, you get the idea. LOL.

My mom always takes those things from the hotel room. I don't mind her doing it, but what I mind is that when we get home, I'm the one who's supposed to clean the bottles that have been opened during travel and stock them in the cabinet and sort the different bottles. That's what's annoying. I personally don't like to take them because of the implication for me when we get home. Haha! My mom gets those to give to her not so well off relatives in the provinces in China. well i guess that's a nice thing to do.

I take the little shampoos, they are great for taking to the gym without lugging a big bottle around. I take the things that are designed to be taken, I don't take towels or anything like that.

yes, as I think once you use them they will have to throw them away as the next customer would not care to have a half filled bottle... and what if someone put something nasty in it as a prank? I am not sure if they have to refresh the coffee packs or not, but I would think for safety reasons they do.

We lived in a hotel for 4 months in 2007 and I did collect the shampoo and conditioners, on the days we didn't wash our hair. I plan on using them when we go camping, it is so much easier to pack these small things. Also, they would be great if you are traveling by plane.

Thank goodness our hotel stay was all covered under our homeowner's insurance. There was no way we would have afford to do it on our own.

You were very lucky to have had that help. The cost of staying in a hotel by the day or even by the week is astronomical and to be honest I have no idea how I did it.

I have had to live in a hotel for a long period of time also. Its a difficult way to live. Especially wondering where you are going to get that kine of money everyday. I'm glad you aren't still having to do so.

If they're not completely empty (conditioner bottles & shampoo bottles) and I'm leaving I take them. I mean, they can't reuse them, I would think it would be a hygiene issue, so there's no point in letting house keeping just throw them away. Everything else just stays where it was.

Of course I have, when I have used them..I don't think anyone wants to use an open bottle..haha...besides, the maids would just throw them away anyway which is why they are like trial sizes so you can take them.. I am not a hotel/motel toiletry collector anyway, because I would rather use my own..So much better than using their stuff anyway..:)

Usually I took the shampoo and conditioner bottles for "future use". Some hotels' bottles are indeed cute and unique. Just like your uncle, I put them in my bathroom as souvenirs. Rarely do I use them except when taking a short, day-or-two trip. Then those little bottles become handy.

I do take the shampoo and the conditioner, but I never take the toilet paper or the towels. We usually use the coffee packets while there since my husband needs to coffee to function.

I understand about the coffee, although they don't usually get a chance to leave as I drink it as fast as I get it.

I remember my mom used to do this a lot whenever we stayed in hotels. In every hotel that I go to, I only really keep/take two things. The key card and the stationary. The key card is my best remembrance that I actually stayed in that particular hotel. I usually only take the stationaries so that I can have something to doodle on while I'm on the plane back. They have come in handy for one of my projects as well. Aside from this, there are times when I would like to keep a couple of things. Like for example, the shampoos. Some hotels have this lavender scented shampoos that I really love. I usually take them with me. Everything else like the toothbrushes, slippers and shampoos, I leave. I don't have much use for them anyways.

Extra soap, shampoo, conditioner and lotion bottles come home with me, if I don't use them while I'm there. The lotion bottles are perfect for the purse and I don't mind giving away the bottle if someone likes the smell since I didn't pay for it (directly) in the first place. Now, I draw the line with things like towels. I have know of hotels that will charge your account if they find those bigger ticket items missing after you check out.

Thats a really good idea to keep the little lotions in your purse. You don't know how many times I wished I had a lotion available to me, but didn't want to take the larger bottles along with me. Thanks for the idea.

There are situations that I take them along with me. Well actually, not all the time. But there are this certain occasions most especially when I am not satisfied of their services I would bring this items like shampoo, coffee, toilet paper. But I have not brought with me towels and the likes. It is just my way of probably compensating myself of their poor services.

Well as most people have pointed out they are included in the cost of the room, so we shouldn't feel bad about taking them, but the towels of course are not.

Not toilet paper, towels or bathrobes, but shampoo ect. In fact my wash bag is almost entirely made up of hotel items. I even carry a couple of emergency toothbrushes that a hotel gave me. I once spent two weeks staying in an hotel in Edinburgh. They had the most delicious shortbread. When I checked out I asked the maid if she would let me have a couple of packets to take away. She gave me an entire box with about 250 4 biscuit packets. We didn't buy biscuits for weeks! On the other hand I did once leave a pair of trousers in an hotel. They still had them when I visited again a year later.

Thats a nice story. That was wonderful of the maid to give you the shortbread. I love shortbread, wish I'd been there and to have your trousers a year later. They wouldn't have kept them for a week here. LOL.

Yep I do take those little complentary items from hotels. I do not take the towels ect... But the little shampoo's and such. I like them and give them to my kids for camping trips, or I use them myslef on those very rare occasions I forget to buy my own. lol. Those little items are also handy when I have guest over nite. They giggle when I hand them the hotel shampoo and soap. So yep, I take them.*smiles*

Other people have mentioned keeping them for camping trips. I think thats a wonderful idea. Or anytime you are going on a trip that doesn't involve a hotel stay and you don't want to pack a full size bottle. Thanks Deea.
