What is the story with WII?

How come WII consoles are so impossible to buy? If this game is so popular why isn't Nintendo manufacturing to meet the demand. It seems to me that if someone goes to buy the WII and is told for months and months that it is not available in every store then that person will buy an XBox or a PS3.
I like the machine and would like to buy one at the list price of $249 by walking into a store and just buying it. I don't want to play games just to buy the game.
I have heard of dangling a product in limited quantities to drive up demand but this is ridiculous. Store do not even create waiting lists to call when a consoles come in-stock. They just say no, it is not available.
Some one explain this to me, please! What do you think about this?

Well Wii consoles take time to make, get shipped, etc. Plus, some people get information on when these consoles come out(not sure how) and are ready to get them the moment they are stocked in stores. Also Wii consoles don't even last too long inside stores anyway they are so high in demand that the moment stores get them they're sold out. I got my Wii console at launch whoo!!!

Why should this be any different from Playstation 3 or X box which are in stock at every store?
Seems like a Nintendo scam on the public!

I was lucky enough to get a WII during Christmas. I stood in line for an hour before Best Buy opened and got one. I had tried for weeks before that and all the clerks said the same thing we dont have any. one clerk told me Nintendo was doing it on purpose. It is really sad I am sure they have plenty they could ship out to stores!

Nintendo CLAIMS it's a part shortage. That frankly is open to debate, since this has been going on over 2 years now.
Really, it's shooting themselves in the foot, as I have seen used systems poping up all over, at better deals then new. So they're loosing out on buyers who turn to other options or get sick of the system.

Are they really that hard to buy? My boyfriend bought a Wii at launch at WalMart, I bought mine sometime last year at Best Buy, my brother just got one for Christmas from Game Stop, plus most of my friends own Wiis. I don't know anyone who has had any trouble getting one...

All of the store chain websites including Walmart, BestBuy, and Circuit City have NONE in stock - and this never changes. All non-chain game stores say the same thing. The Wii is impossible to currently buy.

While there is no doubt a shortage of Wiis, some of which has to do with demand, availability of new units does depend on location. Japan and major American markets get most of the units. Europe and Canada get far fewer units and many places are just SOL.
