I started out this way.I hope it works for you too.
First refer the book Complete Reference Java.It is a huge book which would most probably intimidate you at the start but don't worry, once you start reading the book, you will finish it fast since it is written in a very lucid pattern with loads of examples.
Once you are done with it or at least you are a little bit confident about java, start reading the SCJP book written by Cathy Sierra. It is simply awesome.
You could also visit sites like javabelt.com for giving tests in java free of cost.
Hope my piece of suggestion helps you out !
Best of Luck!

I strongly suggest the book "Addison Wesley - Java Software Solutions 4th Ed - Lewis and Loftus"
The authors are Lewis and Loftus. I learnt what I know from that book and passed my exams without attending any classes :) It also has codes with it. I don't have real book but e-book it really is a good one
