what is short shifting?

Has your friend ever asked why you short shifted whilst driving? Ever wondered what it is?
My girlfriend asked me recently and I gave a reply to which I thought was logical. I then looked it up to find out if I was right. Which I was..
What do you think it is and how would you define it?

Short shifting is what I've also heard called quick shifting. It's when you shift through the gear before you run the RPMs up warranting a shift to the next gear. Do I win a prize or anything? Maybe some cake... that sounds good right about now! :)
