Cookie was right. I turned off the gas fire when I heard the fluttering and put the dogs in the back room, took the vent cover off (I leave it cracked so noxious gasses don't get into the house) and left the room. Then I came back, turned off the tv and went outside to the garage.
Sure enough, ten minutes later, I come in quietly and there's a starling in the living room! Luckily I didn't have to leave the door open too long for him to find his way out. Bet this was the warmest he'll be for days!
I hope he tells all his buddies NOT to jump down my chimney! I thought there were screens over all the chimneys. So I guess I'll do without the fireplace till I can find someone to get up on the roof and put some screening over my chimney.
Cookie was very disappointed when she streaked to the fireplace and there was no longer any sign of critters there! Such a bloodthirsty young lady!

hhahah. i can't believe there was an actual bird in your chimney. that is crazy. At least you figured it out before he burnt himself. Because that would have really stunk up the house. :)

Birds do love to get in unscreened chimneys. We have lived in two place that had open chimneys and had birds come in in both of them. It was interesting trying to get them out. One place had those chimney swifts build a nest during the summer in one.

I was afraid this one wouldn't come out. It's 13 degrees outside--it was 14 when this happened--and the winds are about 25mph. Even in the garage, I wouldn't have wanted to be out very long!
Funny, he wasn't real panicy. When I returned, he was at the window and all I had to do was open the front door, part the curtains in the window so he could get out and tell him to get off the bannister and outside. No bird droppings anywhere, hooray!
