Does anyone make any $$$ on any of these sites?

I just joined mylot and I wanted to know how all this works. Why does mylot or any of the other sites pay you to start or comment on discussion? Does anyone have any more detailed info on this. I read the FAQ on mylot but I would like for someone to please break it down in laymans terms. Is this honestly something worth the time to put effort into or should I keep doing it just for fun? It's hard for me to see why we would be paid just discuss things that interest us. Who actually pays the money and how much exactly does it pay?
