Just thought I would pass along the sad news about the death today of actor Roy Scheider. Reportedly, he had been ill for some time, and passed away while in the hospital. I remember him from the Jaws movies and from The French Connection, but I liked him best in a movie called 52 Pickup.

Is it? I am very sorry to know that.I remember him well for that Jaws. That great white and Roy Scheider becomes synonymous when you think of Jaws. And as you say The French connection is also a great flick with of him with Jene Hackman. It is so sad and scary that people who you know much about passes away one after another.I will watch your recommendation 52 pick up as a tribute to him.

He is a great loss to the entertainment world and the world in general, bala. Luckily, we still have his films to remember him by.

He had been ill for a long time, evidently, carolbee, reportedly with bone cancer. They say that he contracted a staph infection while in the hospital -which was actually what killed him.

Oh no. I am sad to hear it. He is in the film with my favorite car chase, The Seven Ups.And I loved him in All That Jazz and The Men's Club. And I guess most will remember him in Jaws.He will be missed.

I was very saddened when I saw this news on the "bottom line" on MSNBC earlier today. He was always one of my favorites, on of those actors that never quite reached "super star" status but was always in high demand and did a variety of different roles. Of course he's best known for the Jaws movies but his versatility is what gave him staying power. I didn't realize he was in his seventies but that is still quite young these days. He'll be missed.

Lots of people didn't realize he was in his seventies, anniepa. I think we get older but we expect famous people to remain the same -which they can't, of course.

I haven't heard this yet but then I haven't really seen any news recently...going to have to check it out! I enjoyed all of Roy Scheiders movies and like you I especially liked 52 Pickup. I think it was one of those "sleepers" that a lot of people didn't really know about or bother seeing. I feel really bad that he has passed away!

Another great actor gone. After a long illness though you have to be glad he is no longer suffering. I just watched Jaws the other night. Still love that movie after all these years.

Yes i am responding this 3 months later so its already old news. Anyway, it is really sad when someone passed away. I remember him well in the Jaws movies along with Richard Dreyfus.
By the way, is he related to the scheider (Clarks father in smallvile) or has he got other relatives in the movie line ?
