Are You Happy With Where You Live?

I live in Phoenix, Arizona which at this time of the year is probably one of the nicer places you could live. The weather is incredible, but during the summer months, being as its desert, its miserable. I even heard we can expect record tempertures this summer of 126 degrees. Not a place anyone would like to be. I am a resident of circumstance. I didn't chose to live here, I have virtually no family or friends here, but am not in a postion to leave right now. Are you happy with where you live? Or do you continue to stay because you have family closeby? Perhaps you stay because of your job or maybe you just really like it. Whats your reason for living where you do and are you happy with it?

I live in a catherdral city in Southern England. I can lie in bed and look down on the medieval cathedral and see the rise of low hills that surround it. Often there is a low mist that shrouds the Cathedral so that all that can be seen is the top, looking like a space rocket setting off for the heavens. I am 10 minutes from Stonehenge (very small in reality and a nightmare to visit because it is on two major roads and has a very substandard Visitor Centre). I can look across to fields and at night, you can see the headlamps of vehicles coming into town coming down a hill about 3 miles away. I chose to move here 14 years ago, although my family all live at least 70 miles away, and think that I am highly likely to spend the rest of my days here.

It does sound beautiful. I was born and raised in England for the most part of my life, but haven't been back since 1977. Although I was born in Northolt, when I was last there I was in Bicester? Are you familiar with that area?

Absolutely. We have to go back to our other home from time to time due to business, where we are now is heaven on earth. Our summer heat over here in the Tri-State area is a bit hotter than yours, but I love hot weather, and after all, it IS dry heat. LOL. There are just a few things people need to know before coming here in the summer: 1) Wear shoes with thick soles or you will feel the heat from the sidewalk. 2) Don't stand next to a car that has been running if it is sitting on asphalt, because the hot air that comes out from under the car will burn your legs, especially in shorts or a skirt. 3) Take water everywhere. Just don't even think of leaving home without it. We did a fair amount of traveling and thinking about where we would most like to live before choosing this home, and after 10 years, we still consider it tops!

I'm probably wrong, but you mentioned the Tri-State area. My impression was that it was humid there, perhaps I have the wrong area of the country.

There are several tri-state areas, but mine is where Nevada, Arizona, and California meet up along the Colorado River. It can get a bit humid in monsoon season but not comparable to the rest of the nation.

Oh well then you live closer to me than I thought. I wonder if I saw that on your profile and just forgot. My mind is a little scattered of late.

Hi there, Iam sorry to know that it gets so hot in the summer. Well here in india summer is not so good either. And the power goes off frequently as well, lol. But friend i have something to say.. life is never short of problems, where ever u go where ever u live. Look at the people who face extreme cold .. they want some sunny days. I have a friend in u.k who is tired of keeping his windows and doors shut almost 10 months of the year becoz of the snow and extreme cold. So as a matter of fact just remember " Life is a challenge .. and we have to accept it". Cheers, Tutul

I'm not saying its necessarily a problem. I just wondered what motivated people to live where they do or for what reasons they may stay if it is not their first choice.

Well sweety I live in Stirling right in the centre of Scotland and I do love it! Ok the weather isn't great and there are many of the same problems there are the world over but it is full of history and the surrounding area is very beautiful indeed! I have lived other places in the past but I always return home! xxxx

I really don't mind moving someplace else. Our current neighbors are so pretentious and dishonest since my mom would always complain about how they swindled her and they just keep on saying or rather give excuses that already has been said since the years past. I know I'm going to miss some friends here but, I could always come back whenever I can, right? And the town seems to be growing unsafe lately. Recently, a store owner got stabbed by some people who fooled the store owner by pretending to be friends.. I really don't feel safe in our town anymore T_T

wow, that is really hot. it's hot here but not that much i think. for me, i'm happy where i live for now though this is not my permanent home. how i wish though. my family is back in my home country, nepal. as in my parents and siblings. one sibling is here with me too with her family. brother is in uk studying. i'm here as my husband is working for the government you could say under a contract. we still have some more years to go. after that we'll be going back to nepal. i'm kind of worried when we go back as in nepal, the weather and climate is different and i definitely will find it tough to deal with the cold initially. but more than the cold, there will definitely be some difference between the people there and me. i'm happy where i am. it's also due to circumstances that i'm here but it's good circumstances. i hope that soon, you can live someplace where you'd really like to be.

From your response, I am still a little unclear as to whether you would prefer to be in Nepal with your family or where you are currently living. It sounds like both have reasons for you wanting to be there. If you are happy where you are at least it sounds like you'll be there for awhile, and then will you return to Nepal or will your husband get another assignment?

i would like to be where i'm currently living. it's safe here and the country is really good. if i could get citizen here and work and live here, then i'd in time get my parents and in-laws over here too but unfortunately it's impossible. i will be here for some time but not long. i will have to go back. it's not that nepal is bad but i'm just too used to living where i am. thus, i tend to compare that's all. human nature you could say.

I have heard that the sunsets are beautiful and wonderous in Arizona all those different colours! I currently live with my parents as I had to escape my relationship because it was abusive, so I now feel safe where I am, it is a very quiet neighbourhood, friendly and everyone keeps themselves to themselves, we don't have trouble and the neighbours are quiet and respectful. I would like to get a place of my own, but at the moment finances are the problem. I would never live with a partner again and when I do move it will be to get a place of my own on my own.

Yes the sunsets here in Arizona are incredible. I am sorry you went through an abusive situation. I have been there also. He is now doing 15 to life for murder. Its where he belongs. Anyway, I'm glad you had your parents to help and I sincerely hope your financial situation will change and you will once again have your freedom emotionally, spiritually and physically.

No, I absolutely detest where I am living. We moved here 13 years ago for hubby to teach at a small college in this town. It was then a branch campus of a larger state college and the promise was that he would be moved to main campus in a few years. Soon after our move to this place, the main campus dropped all of its branch campuses. We have continually looked for a new job for him, but due to his age and the age of his original research, nothing has turned up. There is absolutely nothing here except a WalMart and a few local mom & Pop restaurants. To get 'provisions' we have to travel 2 hours in any direction to a larger city. We can't wait to retire and get out of here...if not before. We still put in for any job that we see for him! Being a nurse I can work anywhere.

Oh thats really too bad and I hope he is able to retire soon and that you able to move wherever your dreams take you.

My husband is still alive, and that is why we stay here in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Summers and Spring are all right, but at late Fall it starts to get cold and by January, we have temperatures down to 40 below and that includes wind chill. It is also very flat. I have church friends near by but I could easily move to another city which has a sister church. My husband loves flat, he grew up in the Prairies, but I cannot stand the flat as I love the mountains and hills. I love my friends and both my sons and my daughter-in-law and granddaughter are here, but I hardly see them because I do not drive, I have no drivers license and the buses are infrequent. If I had my way, we would move to the States, somewhere where there are hills and water near by.

12 Feb 08
Oh I don't think I could live anywhere that had temperatures 40 degrees below 0. I don't blame you. I prefer mountains too. I wouldn't want to live in the Central States where its all prairies. Not very interesting

I live in New Jersey right now. I don't like it at all. I would never choose to live there forever. Thankfully I know that we won't be there a whole lot longer. My husband is military so we will definitely move in the next few years, maybe even months. I don't like winter, so hopefully we go someplace back down south or warm again.

I really don't like where I live it is really cold in the winter I live in Nebraska and the wind chills have been about 20 below for awhile especially at night. I stay here because I am only 20 minutes away from my mom she is in her early 70's and her health is not all that good. My dad passed away 3 years ago and it really affected her. My mother in law also lives here in town and she watches my kids sometimes for me which is really nice.

I have traveled through Nebraska many times on my journeys from west coast to east coast. It was always during the summer months though. I can't imagine living there in the winter.

I was quite happy when I was still a kid. Jakarta back then was a peaceful place and very nice to live. but nowadays, Jakarta sucks. well, just imagine that you have to face traffic jams everywhere and you will have to leave 2 hours earlier to arrive on time at your office. :( not to mention, when it rains, the flood comes. it's no longer a good place to live and to live happily. I'm thinking about moving to another city and I'm still seeking the best place around.

Well I am happy with where I live. I live here in the Philippines. Although I miss the place where I grew up. (also in the Philippines.) Yes I agree with you that there are times when we are forced to do something that we dont like. Its either things taht we have to do, or places where we have to live, but wherever you are just bear in your mind that... to be happ... is to accept what you have at a particular time. Make the most out of everything.

I, like most individuals could probably argue the point of local traffic or the school system, maybe even the issue of neighbors but I would have to say that aside from the everyday nuisances home is where the heart is. If you live with your loved ones and are surrounded by the items you have aquired over the years that matter most to you, that is what really matters.

At this time, winter almost over, so we expect nice weather will come soon. I don't like winter since it was too cold for me, and my children got sick so easily in the cold winter. But here where I live, there was not much snow, so I was still happy to live here. :)

I love where I live, I am so luckyto live in such a beautiful part on my country, Devon, England. I am only a few minutes from two miles of glorious sandy beach, I look out from my window and see a stream and horse in a field ahead and to the left woodland. As a child one of my goals in life was to live by the sea and I have managed to achieve that. The crime rate is really low so my children have a lovely area to be bought up in with good schools and a good community. I miss friends and family who still live near London but try to visit as often as I can and am now building up a local network of friends here to, lived in Devon for about 8 years but this part only two. I am sorry to hear that you have no friends and family right now but I am sure you will be able to build a network, it takes time, I don't know how long you have been living there. Hoping your situation improves soon. Ellie :)

I'm so sorry for you! I lived there for 28 years--first, I went to visit my brother and ran out of money then I met my husband-to-be when I almost had enough to come home. We got married and he wouldn't leave (he was from Michigan). He decided he didn't want to be married to me so when the divorce was final last year, I came home to Ohio I am SO happy to be home!! Even now, when the windchill is -10, I feel like I'm in heaven. My grown kids stayed in Phoenix but not even missing them as I do would entice me to go back--hopefully not even for a visit. So yes, I'm happy where I live and I hope I'm here for the rest of my life. I hope you escape, too!

the question is very interesting! I live in a small village, in the Padana plain (Italy) near di Po river, the biggest river in Italy. i like this palce for different reason, for example it's very very quiet in every day hours, there isn't car traffic and a little pollution. i know every people that live here, them sons and parents.... we are a big family! but there are things that I hate.... for example: a lot of people are too curious, they want say every chose about me, my family and also.... my money... too intrusive!!! The village is small and so there aren't evry shop that i want, so i must go in the nearest city for shopping. But if I think well, i never didn't go away!!!

I'm glad I asked this question also. I have gotten answers from people all over the world. Sounds like you live in a beautiful place. I can't even begin to imagine what its like to live in Italy. I understand that a small village could be intrusive though.
