Howdy ya'll: Occasionally I suffer from insomnia... I don't want to get hooked on medication, hard 2 predict when it will happen anyway. I have been a night owl ever since I was little. I know sleep deprevation is now being linked to all sort of maladies...
B4 MyLots, I would play solitaire, watch TV, till I got sleepy again. My Question 4 discussion:
What do U do 2 go back 2 sleep, what works, what doesn't work 4 U?
I hate feeling groggy all the next day, running on 4 hours of unfitful sleep...

First, I am hoping that you will seek medical attention! Rule out anything physical or mental, then, and only then try the millions of responses that myLotters like me are going to pass on to you.
It is a challenge that I have never been able to get past, and now I find that I just have to get up and get productive! The more I lay there and toss & turn the more frustrated I get, and that stress just drives me crazy.
Have you linked those sleepless nites to anything that happens, or anything that you have eaten or drunk during the day? It might help to keep a diary & see if anything correlates with your "Sleepless in Seattle," nights?

Thank U 4 all the helpful advice folks. FWIW I will try to express my opinion w/o getting on a soapbox. In general I don't like taking medicine/pills to solve the symptoms of a problem. Doesn't mean I won't do it, I just prefer not to. Trust me, when my uppers were taken in 1 day to begin my denture procedures, I took everything they gave me, 2 days pain & 5 days antibiotics. If there is a safe herbal remedy, I would prefer it.
My insomnia is definitely linked to situational stress. (In between jobs) Food/Drink could B a factor & I like coffee & tea. I know this sounds silly, but plain old water just gets old. While I also like spicy foods, I was raised on it. Probably all of these R contributing factors. I have 2 go see my doctor on another matter so I will bring it up. I never have cuz it's been w/me most of my life &... I'm a guy!
Hey! You've given me an idea! I could keep a journal... Whadayah think? (Computerized of course, cross referenced, linked & blogged)...LOL

I DON'T MIND you poking fun at me...but seriously, often when I keep a journal, I am able to pinpoint, thought & behavioural changes....action leading to reaction.
I have always found, too, that what ever is bothering me at nite, is less the morning after.
You have already pinpointed one of your problems...caffeine loaded drinks, and that includes all soda pops. If you could find a natural drink that you like, and confine your caffeine drinks to before noon and drink fruit, veggie or herbal drink in p.m. it may make a difference. In winter I like hot mulled apple juice & summer, home-made lemonade, or Roses Lime & soda.
There is a plethora of herbs that are calming, too.

Sorry to hear that.May I ask,Have you got a good bed,or at least a good underlay? That really does make a difference.Maybe you could also try cutting out all caffene at least 5 hrs before you go to sleep & try to eat more protein in your diet as this helps 'settle' your bodys metabolism,or using aromatherapy - a few drops of lavender oil on your pillow or an a tissue under your pillow-case will do wonders at bedtime.Hope you find a solution soon.

Thanks!
UR the 2nd person to mention Lavender oil here. Will try it. Seems so "metrosexual", but if it works, better than lying there awake... Bedding is comfortable. It doesn't happen every night, just sometimes, especially under stress, happens more often...

i too suffer from insomnia and hardly have any sleep at nite as many i have always been a nite owl-i do have a friend who is the same as me but she generally drinks chamomile tea and is able to get to sleep i haven't tried that yet but have also heard that a drop or two of laveder oil on your pillow makes you sleep-still haven't tried that but do have a forgetful memory to get these things but am sure if these remedys work for people they may work for you-the one thing i do is meditate when lying in bed and sometimes that sends me to sleep as i try to clear my mind of everything and just listen to the silence-dont know if that may help but suppose you could try it and see what happens-blessed be littleowl

Well I've always been a night owl. I wouldn't say I really suffered from insomnia, although there are some nights when I just can't sleep no matter how hard I try, but I think it's just the way my brain works. For some reason it seems to kick into action at about 10pm! I'm lucky enough to work for myself so I can usually accommodate my weird sleeping habits into my life without causing too much disruption. Normally I'll go to bed about 1am but often it's an hour or so later than that, and I'll get up at around 8am.
If it's a night where I really can't sleep (last night was like that actually - finally fell asleep at 4.15am!) I try to do relaxation exercises. You know - tense and then relax the muscles in your arms, etc. Sometimes that helps to empty my mind but it didn't last night unfortunately. If I get up and do something then that's it - I would literally be up all night. I've tried that and it doesn't work for me at all although I know it works for some people. I've also occasionally tried other things like herbal pillows and using aromatherapy oils just before bedtime and that can sometimes work quite well for me too.

Definitely some similarities here.
10pm seems 2 B the tipping point for me 2. I play guitar, I used to do a lot of Technical Illustration. I've been writing comedy as an outlet to vents/rants taken from my life the last two years just 2 get stuff off my chest. Being creative seems 2 go hand in hand w/night owls. I am most creative after 10pm!
The nights when I cannot sleep at all (I just lie there, close my eyes, no distractions...) there's music playing in my head. Stuff on my iPod etc... Being a musician, seems natural... emptying my head seems 2 B the hard part, getting the CD player to power off, realizing whatever I'm concerned about will still be there tomorrow. (I recall a Carole King song from the 70's titled "Will U Still Bug Me, Tomorrow"?) Just shutting it all down seems difficult... If I can't, I get up & do something. Hope this helps someone, somewhere, sometime!

I don't find myself wakeful very often, but if I do I like to just lie there and enjoy my thoughts. However, if the reason I'm wakeful is hubby's thrashing around and intermittent snoring, then sometimes I get up and draw or paint and then make a nice plate of steak and eggs before returning to bed. It is hard for me not to sleep on a full tummy.

I too suffer from insomnia. Mainly i stay awake worrying about simple things or i'm just really stressed out. And when i finally do fall asleep i wake up with only a few hours or sleep and feel worse then i would have if i just had gotten up and not even worried about trying to make myself go to sleep. Taking medication does help me a lot wherever it be something over the counter or something that the doctor gives you. But alot of prescriptions that the doctor gives you can cost way to much. The one that works best for me and it also the cheapest is Restoril(Temazepam).

It's funny, but I'm the same way. I sleep better during the day, which i cannot due because i have three kids to care for, but I can't seem to sleep at night. That is every night though. I can be completely exhausted and turn everything off, lay down in bed, and then be wide awake again. Sometimes, I have to come back in the living room and start watching tv just to fall asleep. I get tired from watching it or i get on the net and get tired again. I have to almost pass out from exhaustion before i can actually go to sleep in my bed. I've been this way forever though it seems. thanks for sharing and God bless

I'm sorry to hear that you suffer from that kind of awful thing.
For me, my answer to your question is like this, I was taught to count from 1 to 1000 when i can't fall asleep when i was 5 or 6. Sometimes it works but sometimes not. Then i'll try another way, concentrating yourself and think hard about onething and face the wall when doing this. To me it's efficient. Feeling groggy is really bad.
I don't know much about this i guess you are lack of a special sort of vitamin
But anyway it's better to consult a doctor, he/she will offer you professional suggestion.
Best wishes to you and have a good night!
