Do You HomeSchool? Why or Why Not?

We home-schooled for a year and it went very well. My son's grades were excellent. But he wanted to go to public school with his friends. I told him that if his grades slipped we're going back to the original plan. Looks like we're going back to homeschooling. We started this because my son works out of town so often that schools won't give?him the excused absences anymore. How 'bout you. Do you home-school your child? Or why would you like to start.

I seriously thought about it when we adopted the boys. They are slow learners and so they are in ESE classes. I really think that I could teach them more than they are learning in school but my husband refuses because he says that they need to interact with others. I do teach them a lot at night and on the weekends. I also tutor them all summer. They have went from 1st grade reading level to 5th grade reading level in a year and a half!

Hi Gtargirl We help homeschool Five of our grandkids. The youngest is 3 and he already knows is shapes, colors, numbers through 20 and his ABC's. He is learning to color inside the lines. His 4 sisters age 5-7, 9 and 11 also homeschool and love it. They get to have a lot of hands on things. Nature hikes and since we are delegates for the election this year and so is mom they are going to be with us at the polling places which is very educational as they learn and see how this country is run. Learn about candidates and their issues etc. They learn at their own pace and are advanced in some areas a bit behind in others and on par in yet others which I think is pretty natural. We encourage there strong areas and concentrate on the weaker ones. We all live near one another but so rural that the bus does not come up our rural road. The driveway is a mile long and then two miles to the bus stop. We live in the mountains and there are bear, moose and cougar. At first the school district did not like it but after they sent the administration and juvenile officer out 3 winters ago it was thier advice to my daughter and son in law to homeschool the kids. This winter their driveway is snowed in with six feet of snow. They have a trail in which they walk in and out. The kids are at my house until April homeschooling because the walk is so long and cold. They get to measure things in cooking and in sawing. We use real money in story problems or measuring tapes and the like. Clocks and watches are used to learn to tell time. The kids love it. The oldest age 11 is doing 8th grade science and reading and is learning fractions. The second oldest is at 5th grade level in most things. She is 9. The 7 year old is doing 2nd and 3rd grade level reading and math and the 5 year old is 1st grade. The 3 year old is doing kindergarten level things.

In my opinion, i find homeschooling great. Its faster than learning in school, but issues with socializing might show up.

Both my daughters are grown now. The youngest is 21 years old. I raised them by myself since they were 1 and 3 years old. And they both went to public schools. My oldest daughter has said she would like to home school her son. He is 2 now. With all the stories you here on the news and read in the paper about thinsg going on in schools. I think if I had it to do over again today I might home school. There seems to be so many problems going on in the schools now.

Hi there.I had a few years in public school, then moved to a private school for 2 years...and than had public school for another year...my grades dropped, and like you my parents said the same about changing my schooling if my grades dropped any further..I started home-school 3 months later. My grades went up and I was put up a grade due to the individual tutoring I was getting at home. For me I think that Home-schooling was the best option my parents had made for me,as it really did show in my grades less than 6 months later.I now have 2 children of my own,my eldest has just started Home-school.Personally I wouldnt have it any other way.At least you can have a little more 'control' of their education too.And when it comes to the subject of his friends, maybe you could have 'camp-in-the-backyard night'(my eldest loves that every weekend, with her two best buddies),or any sort of regular activity he can do with his friends that will stop him from nagging you...and he gets to socialise aswell.Education is so important.I suppose as long as you have a good foundation for education, however it be taught(private/non-private schools),as they say...each to their own, lol.

I would not have lasted with homeschooling, my kids passed me up so soon as far as what they knew. What does your son do.

I would love to be able to home school my 16 year old daughter but I do not have the time or the knowledge to do so. I work online about 16 hours a day. I wish I could keep her home though because schools are so unsafe these days.

I know just about all the ups and downs on home schooling. I went to this church where every kid was home schooled and because my kids were not, they were shunned, so my first experience, was I would never home school my child.. Then when my daughter was in 10th grade, because the school levy didn't pass, they eliminated busing for the high schoolers. We tried getting her to school, but the first semester was horrible, I opted to go with this program our state has. It is state funded and they supply the computer and pays up to 32.00 a month for internet. She did very well and finished some of her classes very quickly.. Unfortunately, being in the country, she had no one to talk to but myself so the next year, though they returned the busing, she opted to go to the joint vocational school and that wasn't bad because it was in the city where my husband works..So he would take her every day.. Now I have a 5 y/o who goes to school. And I will keep him there as long as possible because I don't want him to get into that mode of only being friends with home schooled children.. But if the school starts adding more and more lessons against my beliefs, that will change, but hopefully going to public school now will not make him into a home school only child..

Here in Ireland we dont have that choice, I wish I did!! If our kids miss a minimum of twenty days then we are fined and brought to court.... :-)

We do not home school, although at times my husband wishes we could when we have issues with the school. Our son is austic and sometimes we feel that we are just not getting what we need from the school, but things have been going well since the beginning of this year. A number of my husband's siblings home school. I have seen it done very well and not so well. My sister-in-law has so much patience & does such a great job - I could never do it - and has home schooled for years and years. She has a set schedule and participates in other activities as well so the kids have a variety of opportunities. The kids get out and meet other kids. I think those are two important things to remember when homeschooling. Her highschool kids recently started going to a private school because of their college plans.

in italy there is no home-school, boys and girls must go at school every day until they are 16 yars old. I think that is very important for every child attends a boy (or a girl)of the same age, so when he will be adult will has more experience whith every people.

i would think home schooling is good for a lot of children sure keeps prices down on uniforms and a way to stay away from those bullies.
