I just won tickets to a local Eric Carle presentation thanks to answering this question. So I thought I would bring it up here.
Here was my winning entry:
Richard Scarry's Best Word Book Ever
I remember checking this book out of the public library every other time In went when I was a child. Each page was a different theme and introduced new and familiar names for objects groups by subject, theme and setting in the city and on the farm, at the dentist, and even the grocery store.
When my oldest daughter turned two, I asked my mom to get this book for her and it is still in our house, even though she is now 11 and my youngest is 6. It is such a wonderful book to introduct the world of reading to a child. I don't care how many times you look at a page you always find something that you haven't seen before.
In fact a couple of years ago it was a favorite of Oprah's!

Was it Rainbow Fish? That's the only one I can think of that had a fish has a main character.

Well my favorite childhood book is a book called Where the Wild Things Are, this is my favorite book because it shows how kids want to be in control and the adult in certain situations and after they get that power they get bored and want to come back to civilization. I really like this book because of the pictures tell the story alone. You don't even need the words to know the story at all.

I loved Nancy Drew!!!!! I wish I would have saved mine. I tried to get my daughter to read them, but she wasn't interested. They have turned them into graphic novels (glorified comic books) but I still can't get her to even look at them.
I have looked at the new Nancy Drew books but they are not the same.

I forgot who wrote it or what was the name of the book but it contained Arabian Nights. :P That's my childhood favorite book. I read the whole book again and again until I reached 10 years old. :)

I loved anything by Robert Munsch, but my favorite by him is Love you Forever.
It's a beautiful story about a mother and her son and their parental bond. It's also a story that can touch children as much as an adult.
As a teacher I still love Munsch books, they are so imaginative and animated. Plus, I love the Canadian themes!

My favorite childhood books was The Babysitters Club and Nancy Drew. I still re read them every so often as I have children and they like to hear me read to them. My eldest child likes those type of books as well. It's nice to be able to share something from my past and bring it into her present.

I forgot about Elmer, which is sad because we were just introduced to him a couple of years ago by my sister-in-law. I really enjoyed them.
This also just reminded me of the original Babar the Elephant Books. They were another favorite of mine growing up.

Any Dr Seuss I would borrow them time and time again from the library. What I liked best was the bizarre creatures in the stories and there was always a lesson to be learned.

Dr. Seuss are good! Whenever I work in our school's library I always try to recommend these to our "K" and 1st graders.

I loved all of Dr. Seuss's books, even the one he wrote about retirement. But does anyone remember the books by Beverly Cleary? I think the characters names was Henry Huggins, Ramona, Beatrix and he had a dog names Ribsey. I loved those books.

I remember Beverly Cleary and love her! My girls school still reads Ramona to the class!!! I tried to get my oldest interested but no desire. Hopefully my youngest will like them.
Also, I remember when I got older I read "Sister of the Bride" by Beverly Cleary at least 10 times. This was back in the early 70's. The book would be a little corny today's young readers. But I loved and must have borrowed it at least 10 times from the libary.
