I for one believe the star rating system should be abolished, maybe it can be replaced with a kind of monetary bonus scheme instead, as the star rating is visible to all members and it looks like showing off, and it goes to some members head who seem to bully other members without a star,or with a lower star rating than themselves.

I don't think so. I don't think they work like that either. I like the star ratings because most of the time it is an indicator of how much quality a user puts into their posts. The higher the star, generally, the better you know the post will be. I like the system and hope it remains.

Yes the stars are a popularity contest indeed. People use the stars to annoy other people. People will minus people they dont like simply to watch the star number fall. I find the opposite of what you said xkaraix.... Those with high stars, their topics are usually boring and are designed for fluff. Fluff meaning that people don't have to really think to reply and they get that whole penny from Mylot for nothing. I would love to see these topics you say are so great coming from tose with high stars.... I bet none of them are terribly interesting. Like the others said.... THere are people with low stars that have some really intelligent and interesting topics, however there are people that are easily angered who take it upon themself to rate negatively just for the satisfaction of watching their star fall. Now these people could easily just ignore the topic they dont like.... but they don't. So I can agree with original poster that the star system should be removed because people only use it to abuse.

Hi Tko2020, In my opinion we should not get perturbued by somebody bullying, if we do not react they will keep quite. We can ask for more monetary benefits for some other reason but not for star rating - even if monetary bonus scheme is initiated the star ratings should and will have to exsist because that shows how far we are active and how far we have to improve our topics for discussion. Good Luck.

Interesting thoughts. But I thought the Bonus paying was when you are chosen as Best Response on a discussion, but even then, I am not so sure. The Ratings thing could have it's flaws but it is set there for a reason, and unless someone has a really good suggestion on how to replace it with something that would work, I am sure nothing here will ever be done. I have been here a long time, and I feel it is up to an individual more than a site to make or break their challenges here. And why ruin it for someone else unless you truly feel they are just being negative to everyone no matter what they say.

I think you are right in saying that some members make a much bigger issue out of the star ratings than the system deserves. There is also a lot of misinformation going around. We now have some clarification from a MyLot official (and, in my belief, a quite important and authoritative one). We must accept, I think, that Crash knows what he is talking about when he says that troll-like behaviour (rating people negative wholesale) CANNOT affect star ratings but there are still a number of people who seem convinced that he is wrong! Bullies, pig-headed and self-opinionated people there will always be in any mix of human society. There often appear to be more than there really are because they are the ones who tend to make the most noise and are most offensive. The quieter and more broad-minded majority wisely keep in the background. I do admit that the value and purpose of the star rating system is not crystal clear and often seems to bear little relation to our perception of a person's worth or popularity. It seems, though, that MyLot (or at least, Crash) think that it is valuable and represents some kind of statistic well. There seems to be no question that it will be abolished, so the best advice is to ignore it (as I do), if you see no use in it. Let those who like to fight over the colour of their stars do so, if they wish. The more moderate among us will let them have their little playground disputes!

I think the star rating system is stupid. It has absolutely no function, accept for minus maniacs to go around and make your star fall if they disagree with you. I agree with the above posters and it's merely a popularity contest. Also the star system is broken, even though mylot won't admit to it. I say get rid of it!

I think the star rating should stay. First I didn't knew how it works but then i discovered it and i saw i have a very low star. I dont understand why I have that because in my eyes I just make normal and good responses. I never noticed any bullying against me because of my low star ranking. Everybody wants to help you here. Now I just try to post better responses so that my star rank increase, I dont like grey ^^
