Tragedy Averted!

I just want to share this here with everyone. As some of you know, I've been babysitting a little girl, since she was 8 months old. She's now 6.
Just this past Saturday afternoon, her mom and dad were taking a load of garbage to our 'garbage hut,' on our townhouse complex property. They drove there in their truck.
Their little girl, mentioned above, wanted to 'walk back' home, and so they followed her in the truck. Just before the entrance to our townhouse complex, their daughter, who'd been running, slipped and fell on some ice.
Her mom was driving, with her dad in the passenger side. Suddenly, their daughter disappeared from their view, as they turned into the complex. They heard a thump, and screaming and crying. Her mom had run over her daughter's foot, while she was lying on the ground.
Miraculously, it was the side of her foot, and she was wearing heavy winter boots. They took her to the hospital emergency, and nothing was even broken. The foot is just badly bruised.
Her mom couldn't stop crying. Her dad was still quite upset when I saw him yesterday. What a tragedy this could've turned out to be! I love this little girl, and it brings tears to my eyes, as I'm typing this. Can you imagine how her parents feel?
Have you ever had anything like this happen to somebody you love?
What would you do, if it were a loved one, and especially one of your children?
Thanks for taking the time to read this.

First, I would like to say I am very happy that the little girl was all right. Now, I am going to play the devil's advocate. I can understand letting the girl walk back home. However, I am a bit confused about one point. How close were they driving to the little girl? It seems to me that the parents would have noticed the ice on the ground when they came out to the truck in the first place. If so, why would they follow so closely in the truck? Also, with a 6 year old, why didn't one of the parents walk with her? I can understand how horrible the parents must feel at this time, but it also seems like this accident could have been prevented by using a little common sense.

I have a friend that had something similar happen but with her son who was much younger. They were moving out of their house and had the moving truck up in their driveway. When it was time to move it, her husband and his friend got in the truck to back it out. Without knowing, their 2 year old was playing in the grass way too close to the truck. When they started driving, my friend yelled to her husband and they stopped the truck. Not only had their son fallen, the trucks tire was sitting on his arm. Well, they got the truck off and luckilly he only had some minor bruises and tire marks. I say luckily because he was so young that his bones were still soft enough to just give enough when the truck went over it. He was fine. Now with a three year old of my own I can't imagine what it would be like to have your child go through something like that. i would be devistated.

How lucky that the poor little angel wasn't badly injured my dear friend I am extremely grateful that she only suffered a bruised foot when you consider what could have happened! It is so easy for these things to happen and I can't begin to imagine how her parents are feeling and how much worse it could have been! Give your young friend a huge hug from me and Niamh when you next see her - having a daughter the same age makes it all the more real to me as I know how I feel when she has even a small injury! Luckily nothing like what happened to your friend has ever happened to me and I continue to pray that it never does! xxx

Oh someonesmom, I feel so bad for everyone, including you. What a horrible thing to happen. I would feel terrible. I am so glad that she was ok. Just the thought of this makes me want to cry. I bet you all just want to hold her and never let go.

thank god.. the accident didnt come out worse than just a bruised foot.
i think i can understand what her parents - especially her mom feels... as a mother, all we want to do is to keep our child safe and away from all danger... it is difficult to 'accept' that you almost run-over your own child.. i dare not think of the possible 'worst senario'.
i just hope everyone - the mother, her husband.. and the child - can deal with the accident.. and hope that no one blames the mother for what happend.. it was an accident...

I opened my freezer once and a frozen bag of potato shreads fell out and onto my sons head. He started crying hard and fell to the ground. I picked him up to look at it and I lost it too. It put a deep cut in him that was bleading fast and bad. I was so upset by it all. I still feel horible about it. Now I look down before I open the freezer.

OMG---how horrible, yet I'm so glad the outcome wasn't worse, and yes, I can imagine how her parents must have felt...I mean it could have really turned out so much worse than it did. That was one lucky little girl. No I never had anything like this happen to anyone I know..thank God!!

They must be feeling terrible. I hope they realize soon that it was just an accident. I know if it were me I still would be hugging my daughter every chance I could just because I would be so happy that she was okay.

Wow! I'm so glad the nothing really tragic happened as a result of this accident...If it was my husband and myself I would be so distraught and beside myself...I don't know what I would do...If it had happened to a friend of mine I think about the only thing I could do or say is that it wasn't their fault and accidents happen and to be thankful she is okay.

that is terrifying...i would be real upset, too! That little girl must have the same hard working guardian angel my son has! A few weeks ago he was running down our steps and went flying all the way from the top to the bottom where we were...it was so terrible seeing that happen...I thought for sure we were going to have to go to the hospotal - but he was fine somehow.
It makes me sick just thinking about those kinds of things happening...your story is a good reminder for us parents to be careful with our kids!
