I guess you have to look after both and handle with care and then they would last...

I have a few of the old albums and the pictures on them are nice. I wonder if the compact disc does last longer than the LP albums because there are some very old albums still around from many years ago.

Being an old audiophile, I have to say I still prefer the LP. There are some recordings, depending on how they were made, are fine on CD, but the richer, more full sound will come from an LP every time. I have spent over 30 years in the high end audio business and it's just a common theme that LP's are being compared with CD's. There are exceptions to every rule, but generally, yes, LP

The news program I caught on TV said the exact same thing you just said. Question: lets say the LP sound quality is superior to the compact disc, doesn't the record playing device have to be top quality too?

Oh yes, you are very correct in that statement about proper high quality equipment. You could have the best LP out there but if you are using medium grade equipment, of course it will produce only what it is capable of. It comes down to every part of your audio set up. Basically, cables, turntable, cartridge, everything. What people don't consider are basics like cables, damping for turntable...any vibrations anything will disturb the purity of what was recorded.

Yes and the size of them especially when you have a large collection, they are heavy and take up so much space.

I have never got a chance to use LP Album, but I do have curiosity towards this legacy sound recording medium. Therefore I had read the response of other responders and roughly have some ideas on how the LP Album like. I feel that it's less practical compared to compact disc due to its size and vulnerability to scratches. But I will give it a try if given a chance. The problem is, it's really difficult to buy the player and the album itself in my country. It's like already obsoleted in the whole country. Compact disc, in other hand, could be found anywhere. DVD is still very popular and blue ray is emerging.

Yes you are right and I don't even own an LP player anymore. The CD changed all that and now blue ray is coming.

I too, as posters before me have stated, remember carefully stacking my albums onto the spindle of a turntable! I had oodles of albums and 45's when growing up. During my last long-distance move I finally sold my turntable and albums, a decision that I have regretted on many occasions. If albums make a comeback, I'm not sure if I will switch back to them or not. I remember having to take great care with the albums to prevent warping and scratching. I remember too how an album could actually 'wear out' from being played too often! The CDs are so easy to store, and while they too can be damaged, it isn't quite as easy to damage them!

Yes I agree, there have been so many modifications and improvements with the original old album. I don't even own a record player anymore. Well if they do make a come back I for one will stick with the cd's. Imagine trying to play an LP in your car - HA!

I much prefer the CD only cause I can play it in my car or on my puter.

I guess if the LP comes back many people will not give up their CD's, they are small, easy to transport and like you say they can be played in cars. Thanks.

I much prefer the compact disc mainly because it's easier to store and much much smaller than it's counterpart, LPs are more likely to get scratched easier too, I never liked them much to be honest and was more keen to switch from LPs to cassettes than from cassettes to compact discs. Besides you can play cds on computers now, so no need for a gramophone or record player which takes up even more room!

Hi wolfie, yes your right, the cd's can be played in computers so if the LP's return that's not going to work. Thanks.

Actually I prefer CDs now...they are smaller and can store more music just on one side of the disc as compared to music on both sides of the LP. I have to admit there are some LPs that just aren't in existence anymore...I unfortunately about seven years ago had to get rid of my entire LP collection...uh, very long, long story why--I had a lot of really vintage records a music collector would have killed for...like the original releases of the Beatles albums, bootleg Stones albums. ..then there were my mother's records and with her she had some 78s of rare recordings..like I said a long story of why I had to get rid of them all...then too, it was gosh darn hard to find a new record player...they are coming back too--figures. :(

I think a lot of people got rid of their collection (I for one) when the CD's come out. I don't even have a record player anymore, my stereo only has the radio, cassette and CD player in it. Just our luck - huh!

I like the compact disc much better. You can take them anywhere. Discs also take up less space. You also don't have to worry about replacing needles. And you can listen to music anywhere or anytime you want with a disc player.

They sure do take up a lot less space. I don't even have a record player any more. Thanks.
