As usual we see homeless peoples, when asked several reasons are given, like they do not have any family, no friends to support them,no sfety net, poor, lazyness etc. it is hard to believe that lazyness is the reason for being homeless. i have seen homeless walk all over the town to collect plastics, pushing carts, collecting cans I don't think a lazyperson can do all these. No family friends to help them in tough time may be partly true. what you say is the reason somany peoples are homeless and if you had power how would you solve the problem?

There isn't any one reason. There are hundreds. Each person who ends up in that position has their own story and reasons for how they got there. I was homeless for nearly 6 months when I was 16. I left home because of an abusive father, and had nowhere else to go. I couldn't go to foster care, because my father had them convinced I was nothing but a rebellious teen and he was the picture perfect parent. I couldn't get social assistance (welfare) to get my own place, because here, if you're under 18, and a parent says you're welcome to come home if you want to, they won't help you. I couldn't work because there's nowhere in this city that will hire 16 year old's when there are adults scrambling for jobs, and even if there was, you can't get a job without a fixed address. The only one central factor that applies to everyone that ends up homeless is a feeling of helplessness ... of having no options left.

Many homeless people are mentally ill. They have no faculties to deal with life and because of the laws we have now, they can't be held in institutions and medicated back to sanity. The homeless population really exploded in the 60's when the ACLU got laws passed ostensibly to protect the mentally ill but it the unintended consequences put thousands on the street with no homes or support. You tell a mentally ill person they need medication, you think they'll take it?! So we can't force those homeless who are mentally ill to go to hospitals and be taken care of, be clean and well fed and comfortable. I believe they account for the majority of homeless, although the working poor aren't far behind.

Look mahesh these kind of peoples that you call them lazy are not actually the lazy persons. But the thing they are suffering from is the lack of knowledge. Because with the help of knowledge of Literacy a person is able to do something or to improve their life standard. But these person work as individual for themselves only and they survive that way.

I believe there are many reasons people become homeless, one of it can be lack of motivation to cope with the stress of work and family. Therefore they want to run away from the responsibility's that normal life can create. Then of course you also have the people who lost all their money and have no other choice than living on the streets, but again, the lack of motivation comes up again, if they are really motivated to return to normal life, they surely can , but they tend to fall into a bottomless pit of selfpity, and they believe they can never return to normal because they arent good enough etc. There are so many reasons people are homeless. These are just my thoughts.

there is no main reason, people are homeless for different reasons, some cannot find housing they can afford, many are mentally ill, some are alcholics and waste their money, some can't find work or lack the skills to get a job, etc. some believe it or prefer to live on the street, I know it sounds strange but some do.

A lot of good answers already. Most people do not want to be homeless. It could have been a fire and no fire insurance, Job downsized. Illness that wiped them out. Low income and pay so they cannot make the rent or mortgage. Cut in wages. There are your addicts and there are the runaways. The uneducated and illiterate and many older people have no family or family doesn't care and they retire and find they cannot meet the taxes on their social security or illness wipes them out. Some are working but the pay is so low and the cost of housing is high minimum wage doesn't pay the rent, utilities and other needs for living and the low housing lists there is a 2 or 3 year waiting list. Preference is given to the elderly and disabled and mothers with young children. But there are thousands waiting in all those categories and housing is limited. Many don't want low income housing and people. So there are many reasons why people are homeless. Few want to be.

The reasons are countless. One major reason in Australia is that the state governments closed a lot of mental institutions (not that these would have been very nice places)down and the patients had no where else to go. The charitable organisations such as the Salvation Army are inundated with people requiring care. We as a community seem to turn a blind eye to the misfortunes of others unless it is on a huge scale. The promotion of all the effects of homelessness (gambling, drinking ) provides a good tax windfall for the governments but they don't want to spend enough to do anything worthwhile.

there are many reasons for it. but in my view it is because, some of the groups of peoples dont think for upcoming days they just take a life simple, but when the time comes to earn something,to make something they cant do it. they could simply do those things which are not countable now a days. these types of peoples cant give there best presentations, they cant represent themselves in front of any one, they just got to do those lower works like Mahesh just said collecting plastics, pushing carts, collecting cans.........
