How to become popular among friends?

I seems to fail in making good friends, i try to be kind to everyone, but there are not many good friends around me. Few classmates or friends would like to come to visit me , I don't know what's wrong with it. I feel so lonely sometimes. It's so hard for me to be popular among friends. I know i'm not good at joking and speaking, so is it the reason? I don't know how to deal with it, how to change my situation? is there any one can help me out?
