My 1 year old eats just about anything I put on her plate. My 11 year old eats hot dogs and chicken. My 7 year old eats things if her older brother isn't around but if he is around and says he doesn't like some thing then she doesn't like it. How do you get them to try new things?

i might have to take up lightningd's advice too. my son,5, doesn't want to eat at all. he's really picky. he's basically into snacks and junks. well i am too actually. sometimes i wonder if my genes went to him regarding being a picky eater. he only wants to drink milk and not the staple food like rice though his teacher does mention that he eats the food there except for the porridge which it seems he doesn't really seem to like.

that's true. but my husband eats everything. wish my son would eat anything and still remain thin though. hehe but i'm worried now that my next child will be like my husband. she might eat anything and it'll be even more tougher if she gains weight easily for her. see how it goes. there's still years to go hehehe

Well, what I used to do is tell them to at least take one bite. I would also tell them that as they grow up, their tastebuds change, just like their body. It grows and changes. Kind of like shoes. While you may like a certain pair of shoes, eventually, they don't fit anymore. Tastebuds grow and develope and start to like new things all the time. That is how I got my oldest to try new stuff. Tell them you only learn and grow if you try new things. It worked for me, but it might not for you. It's worth a shot though.

Thank you for your response. Yes I try to get them to try at least one bite. That is normally followed by them making gagging sounds. My 2 older are only with us on the weekends and there mother doesn't make them try anything. She will let them eat chips if thats all they want. In my house I make healthy meals.

Well, you could always go back to the old stand by... "This is dinner, eat it or go hungry." But then, being the step mother, that could blow up in your face. I always had plenty of fruit and stuff around for my kids to snack on, and if they didn't like what was for dinner, they would usually just say they would eat an apple and have some milk. At least it was better than junk food.

Thank you again. We have done the go hungry thing before and thats just what he did. I have told them take a bite if you dont like it I will make you some thing else but i wont make 5 different dinners if you dont at least try the first one. its just agervating to me that they will say i dont like it so many times that they really wont like it. Take mac n chesse for example they wont eat it in less its 1 type of mac n cheese they say they don't like the others. ITS MAC N CHESSE no matter what box it comes from! lol

my kids are great when it comes to eating. however that is because we have a three chance eating rule in my house. they have to give me three chances to make something they have never had before they can so they do or don't like it. from what i have read it takes a child at least three times before they eat something before they can determine if they like it or not. but i have always done that with my children. don't say you don't like something unless you try it first and that goes for everything you do in life

My kids are so brain washed that they don't like some thing they really don't. If they were with us full time then they wouldn't have a choice but since we only have them on the weekends I have to becareful of what they want to go home and tell mom. You know kids they play parents against each other that live together let alone ones that don't.

well ironicly enough my bartender was discussing this, this past weekend. her kids only eat chef borardy, peas, grean beans, and roman noodles. both are rather young, in her case she just goes with it and lest it be. doesnt have time to fight them she says.
as u know i childless, thank you God

My son goes through stages where he will eat anything we put in front of him, and then other times he will only eat hotdogs, chicken nuggets, meatloaf, corn and fruit. Those are his most requested items anyway, though. He's only 2 years old, though, so I think that is why it changes so much.

This is very good session and i am interested to respond. My seven year daughter is not interested to take anything. If she want to take anything then somebody have to tell her stories or need to switch on the Telivision. Almost all kids have some favourates dishes. My girl doesn't have any favourate thing and it is herculian task for me to give her something

my youngest would eat peanut butter all day long if I permitted it
my eldest has to eat low fat due to a medical condition
my daughter is very fussy - and turns her nose up at most things
----
how do I get them to try new things?
they know that tastebuds can change and so do preferences so they must keep trying a disliked item to see if they like it now....
but most importantly
We pray God to bless our food before we eat and we thank Him for the food after we eat
The children know that it is wrong to ask God's blessing and then outright reject it - unless it makes them physically ill they eat what is served... now if I know they do not care for a food I will not cause them to eat a lot of it, but at least a try is served.

My 12 year old daughter was always the pickiest. If she didn't like the way the food looked she wouldn't touch it. She used to refuse Chinese food until she discovered Shrimp with Mushroom. And she likes plain rice. Her favorite food is burritos.
My 10 year old used to like mushrooms but now doesn't. She says she doesn't like pizza or hot dogs, but will eat them. She'll only eat rice if it has cinnamon and sugar on it. Other than that she shares my tastes in spicy food - except pepperoncinis which I like with pizza and my oldest likes by themselves.
My 6 year old son barely eats anything. (I swear he's gonna be a vegetarian when he grows up) He eats very few meats. No steak or roast or sliced turkey. He'll eat chicken legs, hot dogs and corn dogs. Mac and Cheese is his favorite thing. And he'll eat rice, cinnamon rice and noodle soups.
Side note: My husband is pickier than them all put together. -Tink :D

I thought I was a very picky eater until my 3 year old. I'm convinced that pretty soon here he might just turn into a chicken nugget with ketchup.
