I just went into the kitchen and there he was SITTING in his litter box! Smack dab in the darn box! I didn't just change it so that can't be it. It doesn't need to be changed so that can't be it!! Of course when I walked in there he just gave me that look he has as if to ask me what the heck I want now...lol...and he just sat there looking at me. Only when I went over to the box to sweep up the litter that had come out of the box probably when he made his jump in did he get out and walk away?Is this strange behaviour? This is the first time he's done it so is he trying to tell me something? Has anyone had a cat do that?

Our cats sit in the litter box as well. It is normal cat behavior. One of our cats actually will sleep in the litter box if the mood strikes him.

lol...no he wasn't going to the bathroom and the litter box is in a far corner of the kitchen. It's hard to explain but it's in sort of a nook.

I mean, sure my cat lays on the counter and all but no litter in the kitchen! ha ha. glad to know it's a litter nook :)

Yes, some cats love their litter box. Whether it is the feel of the litter, or just a cosy place to sit, I can't really tell. My litter box is a covered one, (with a lid), so my two cats tend not to use it just to sit in. One of our cats however, is fascinated every time I change the litter. He races to the litter box every time he knows that I have changed it. When I had the open kind of litter box. I had cats that just sat there. Buit then cats will just sit in any old box you leave lying around. It's just a "thing" they have.

I'm going to have to look into a covered litter box. I forgot they even existed since I haven't had a cat for years.

They are very good, well worth the money. Some cats even prefer the privacy.

Do you have more than one cat? If you do, he might be guarding it, I had one cat that did that. Of course, he liked to roll in clean litter too.... I miss my little Mandrell monster kitty (Mandy.)

I only have the one cat right now. I've been thinking about getting another one in the near future though.

Yes I've had a few cats do that and for the life of me, I don't know why. The only thing I can come up with is security. It has his scent and he knows it's his and it being a box is another thing, cats love to get into a box or a bag, anything with an opening so to speak. Maybe you can search the internet on cat behavior, it may give you an answer.

I don't want to worry you, but you might want to be sure he is actually able to urinate regularly. Male cats are known for a urinary tract blockage that, eventually, can be fatal. I have lost two males over the years to this and did not realize they had a problem until it was too late. A vet can tell you for sure. I truly do hope it's just his quirky behavior.

He's definately not having a problem urinating. I am aware that they can have that problem and do keep an eye out for it.

The only time my cat would lay in the litter box was when she was sick. I guess that was the only place she felt sheltered. ( It's a covered litter box.) Unfortunately she had kidney failure and the Vet said they are drawn to places that they know are their own. Although some might say this is normal behavior I would still keep an eye on Bigguy to make sure he is feeling OK.

Maybe he is just telling you that he knows it is his, you got it just for him. He must feel safe there. That is all I can figure. I want to see what else is said to you.

I've got a cat called Snoopy, affectionatly know to all my family as "mummy's baby" even though he'll be three March 18th. Until we moved in August he was an indoor cat but since we moved he goes outside and loves it although he is rather nervous. He comes in every 10-15 minutes to check that I am still here and let us know that he's still around. He comes in even when he's out just to use his litter tray, which is a sure sign of his lack of confidence outside and every now and then we too will find him just sitting in his litter tray (also a covered one with a hood) and he will sit there until he is ready to come out again. I know he is a real skittish cat and a real mummy's boy (he lays on my lap nearly every evening for about 1 hour just having a full belly rub/massage, which he absolutely adores but I feel that the "hiding" in his tray is just his time out. He doesn't seem any more skittish either before or after and although at first I was worried but after a time I just think it's what he wants to do and I have to say it's almost as if it's getting out of his system, cos he doesn't seem to do it so much now that I leave him to get on with it. Don't worry too much but please do keep an eye and as someone has said before, keep an eye out for UTI or cystitus or other infections. (Look out for frequency in urinating and also blood in the urine), Michelle xx

Could be several reasons, but you have to make dsure it is not a medical setback. Make sure to check the urine/stool carefully if they look normal (worms, color change, etc.)? And also once, a well loved cat of our's had some serious constipation which grew to worse health setbacks. So, please be caring for your kitty. Hopefully it is not anything unsafe, but keep watch. And also, kitchen is a strange place to have a litterbox. At least wouldn't you feel strange if it was your open bathroom there? ;o)

You might want to make sure he doesn't have a urinary tract infection. A trip to the vet may be in order. Let us know how it turns out.

i second the idea of the litter box being a comfort spot. when i first got my cat from the shelter she would frequently lay or sleep in the litter box. eventually her habits changed and now she just goes in there to actually use it.

I think she gave a very good response, that I didn't think first off the bat. I'll respond with my other thought directly to your posting.
