Is it normal for a cat to growl like a dog?

My cat is strange. If you walk to close to her she growls. If you pet her at the wrong place she growls. I find this to be very strange. I have never before seen a cat that growls...Anybody out there have a cat that growls? Please tell me that I am not alone. Or if your cat has weird traits too, feel free to share.

My cat does and always has. I think every cat can or does. Some just don't do it often or it sounds different becuse of they're "voice".

My cat does have a loud voice. So I guess that makes it really easy to hear it. Thanks for your response.

My cat is really big, and he "growls" when he is upset. But hes the only cat i've ever seen do that! Lol, but at least I know i'm not alone! RC

i have two cats a male and a female..they are a brother and a sister,the female growls a lot espacailly when she hear the bell ring or a knock on the door of our home..it is not that strange at all..

My cat Spot does growl when you touch her in a way that I think is painful for her. That's why I just pet her head because that's what she likes. When she likes to be petted on her tummy, she rolls around. LOL.
