If you need to switch from Liferay to another portal, all you have to do is install those portlets in a portal from new provider, eg. JBoss (open-source), WebSphere (commercial IBM), etc You can also create your own portlets that run your own business-specific functionality. By the way, you will be able to sell them to other users which run open-spec'ed portals.
