Suggestions on how to fight a cold...

Here is my problem. When I get a cold, I get it like it is my job for the next 3 months. I tend to get Bronchitis in October or November each year. This year it started November 4th (2007) and I had such a low immune system that I managed to catch 2 more colds once the Bronchitis started to subside. I finally got mostly healthy somewhere mid to late January and was healthy for about 3 weeks (give or take) until this past Friday when I caught the cold that both my hubby and my boss had. I do everything I can to prevent colds. I got the flu shot this year but, that is only good for the flu which I don't tend to get anyway. I wash my hands many times throughout the day. I wipe down the parts of a grocery cart that I will be touching with antibacterial wipes. I take Airborne and Zicam. I try to avoid touching surfaces, while out and about, that germ carrying hands might touch. If a store has and automatic door, I will use it, or I will use my shoulder to open other doors. I try to keep my hands off railings when walking up and down stairs. I am becoming a germaphobe. What more can I do? Airborne is pretty much like a power packed multiple vitamin so, I can't really take more as far as immunity boosting vitamins. I am just at such a loss. It ticks me off to see other people catch a cold that is usually not as bad as mine, and they get over it in a week or 2 while I suffer from colds for 3 months. And, now that I have this new one, I will probably just be getting over it around the time that my March allergies knock me around. Any help or suggestions that people can give me will be greatly appreciated. I have tried a lot of stuff to thwart colds and they have not been successful. But, if someone can suggest something I haven't tried and may not know about, I would be so grateful just for the suggesion...whether it works or not. At least it would give me hope. Oh, and even if I go to my doctor the second day into a cold and get prescriptions like the Z-pack or other antibiotics, they have no effect on me, regardless of how soon I get something to fight the cold. How crappy is that? Anyway, thank you in advance for any suggestions!

It sounds like you have a bad immune system. You should think about building your immune system instead of taking medications. Medications only help you fight the cold you have now...it won't help you prevent another cold from happening. If you take a Vitamin C, D and other vitamins on a regular basis. Also, you can take a probiotic called Flora Synergy (Lactobacillus Sporogenes). A naturopathic doctor recommended these to me to help with a cold I had and my cold was gone after a week. I haven't had a cold since then. Peppermint essential oil in hot water while you put ur face over it will help you breathe as well. Try it! It worked for me...Good Luck!

I forgot to mention that oregano oil is sometimes good for your immune system as well but don't take it too often!

Thank you! I know C and D are good immune builders. I eat a lot of leafy greens which I think have a lot of both vitamins. I think?!? But, I have never heard of Flora Synergy. I might go to the herb store where I have gotten some natural stuff to treat my acid reflux when I have a flare up and see if she has Flora Synergy. Is it a brand or something in a supplement? I try to stay away from the antibiotics as much as possible because I know that it actually demolishes your immune system so that, even if it is successful in making you better, you are vulnerable to another infection if you come into contact with one because your body can't fight it even if it wants to. But, if I am traveling when I am sick, I will try an antibiotic to try to get better sooner. But, I am pretty sure I have given up hope on those because they don't help and only cost me money. So, thank you again for your suggestions!

Maybe just ask the herbalist if they have a probiotic supplement. Thats what it is. I bought mine from my naturopathic doctor but I am sure you can buy them other places. I believe you can receive it from yogurt as well but not as much as in pill form. Good luck!
