What Should Be Done With The Prison System?

Our society tends to think that the solution to the crime problem is to simply throw people in jail. I read somewhere that criminals who finally served their sentences get out of prison to commit more crimes and end up in prison again. I've also heard different arguments from people on how to tackle the crime problem. But I'd like to focus on the prison system itself. If people were to end up in jail in the USA, what are the chances that they'll get out of jail as better persons? Why or why not? Is prison primarily meant to punish people or reform them? How can prisoners be reformed, if you believe that's possible? What would you recommend to prevent prisoners from becoming repeat offenders?

Hi always, Thank you for starting this very interesting discussion. I live in Canada but I believe there are problems in the prison system all over, and those who go to jail and serve their sentence usually end up back in the system. Punishment is never the answer, there must be reform. We need to focus on reforming the system so that those who go to jail will come out with a better outlook on life then when they went in. They will also need support when they are released, so that they can become law abiding, tax pay citizens. We have to be willing to spend a lot of money here, but think of the future and the money and lives that can be saved down the road. Many people who go to jail for the first time can be reformed, if given a chance, and that has to be our top priority. Blessings.

The prison system is terrible. They put people in jail and they get to go outside, have 3 meals a day, watch tv, earn money, exercise, have phone calls, and use the internet that's not a punishment that's why criminals don't care about going to jail because its just like being at home almost. People have to want to change but these criminals only get a slap on the wrist so of course their going to keep on comitting crimes. I feel what ever crime you commit should be done right back to you if you murder people they should kill you if you rape people you should be raped and then have both of your arms cut off. They need to let me make the laws I will teach these idiots a real lesson.
