Gauging?

I did a few searches on Mylot and didn't see any results on the subject. Does anyone here gauge their piercings? (Gauging = stretching them, if you aren't familiar with the term. Google 'gauged ear' and you should get a few images of gauged ears, as well as some plugs & things.)
I've been considering doing it for a while now because I've been wanting to get another piercing but am wary of doing so because I'm not sure that I feel up to dealing with all of the pain and constant sanitation.
I know that I would have to keep my ears clean when/if they're gauged, that's given anyway. I'm just not for rubbing cleaning solution on myself several times a day.
So, thoughts on gauges? Do you think they're gross, or conversely, do you like them? How big is too big? Have you ever considered gauging for yourself?

I don't have anything against gauging as you call it - I think we refer to it as tunnelling or something I'm not sure but havent heard that term used before. But when my brother startd expressing interest in getting it done I was like noooo! Because I've always had it in my head that one day hell be a successful business man all kited out in his suit etc. and I just can't see a 'baggy ear' (assuming he's taken it out) would look the part. At the moment he's very cool, in a band and all that, so for him its the logical progression lol. Anyway he has had it done now, in both ears. He's gone bigger than his initial limit, but he says this is the biggest, though if I believe him or not is another matter, and so hopefully this size is not to big to go back again. Fingers crossed!

i used to be at 7/16"(000 gauge).that's almost a half inch.had em like that a few times for a 1 or 2 month span each time.
i then eventually decided to let them shrink all the way down to 8 gauge though, and then i restretched to where they're both at 0 gauge(5/16").that's 1/16" bigger than 2 gauge(1/4"),so "0 gauge" seems to be a happy and content medium for myself.what i often do though,is downsize.i'll wear 4 gauge rings for awhile and then put in 2 guage rings to wear for a day or two, then i put back in the "0 gauge plugs".they kinda remind me of big vitamin e tablets...heh heh.

I think the technical term is 'stretching', if it has an actual name. :P
Best of luck with your brother, I hope his ears will shrink. I don't think dangly lobes will really work well when he's older. :P

Yeah, 4 or 2 is probably as large as I would consider going, just because I would be so afraid that they wouldn't go back! I like having modded lobes now, but I'll probably want to go back to regular earrings whenever I get older. I can't see me wanting to keep them forever. (Which is why it was a better choice for me than getting a piercing or tattoo, this -will- go back, and takes some time and dedication if you do it right, it isn't an impulse thing.)
Thanks for posting. :D

I don't have any gauged piercings, but my sister does. She quit at about the size of a dime. She had to be in a wedding that required a certain pair of earrings for the attire accents and realized she would never be able to do that again if she kept going.
Personally, I don't really see anything wrong with it, depending on where they're at... Before you do it, though, I would make sure that employment would not be hard to find if your gauged piercings couldn't be covered up. Some even look really clean when the jewelry is really cool!
Me, myself... no. First of all, I'm too old (j/k)... but definitely, no. I have pierced ears (4 piercings in 1, and 2 piercings in the other) but never even put earrings in them except for the one in my cartiledge that i keep there. Otherwise, they are never adorned... poor me... I'm just either too lazy or it became unimportant. I don't wear jewelry anywhere else, either. (Got rid of the belly ring during my last pregnancy...)

Thanks for the response.
I'm currently working at a call center, and there's no strict dress code and I'm not going to any huge sizes. I think a 6g or 4g would be as large as I would go, the thought of someone being able to stick their pinky in my ear freaks me out a bit.
