I usually just get up and get on the computer or watch tv or a movie or something. I know it is usually pointless to stay laying in bed so I try to do something else. If my mind is racing sometimes what I do online or what is on TV distracts me enough so i can get tired again and fall asleep.

This happens to me quite frequently o2befree. I usually come right here to my keyboard, check my email, do any surveys I might have and ultimately come on to mylot to see what may or may not be going on.
Hey its good to see you:)))

Yeah, I, believe it or not am trying to quit the computer....LOL
Long Story, but the condensed version is it is an expectation during reconciliation. ughhhhh. I was a myspace junkie prior. Pretty sure I am having withdrawels : (
But this site seems innocent enough.

I hate it when my brain just won't close down, it keeps on churning stuff over, and keep thinking about stuff, like what's happened today and what is happening tomorrow. So what I do is read a good book which tires my brain out and then I can sleep better, either that or do some suduko puzzles which will also tire my brain out. I also keep a notepad beside me in case I have some ideas about discussions or what needs to be done tomorrow so I can empty my brain rather than have it on my mind so that I will toss and turn. I also find a nice chocolatey milky drink will relax me or a hot bath beforehand.

Thank you for sharing Wolfie, I too keep a notebook handy. I feel like sometimes if I can just put whatever thought on paper it will allow me to release it. Funny thing though then I end up journaling for hours with one thought leading to the next...LOL I tell you with me it is an endless cycle, especially these days : )

Recently this hasn't happened to me. But when it does I usually try sleeping with my head at the foot of the bed...it doesn't usually work though. Or I try going to the living room and try to sleep on the couch. If all that doesn't work I give up and eat something, watch tv, or get on the internet.

When i can't go to sleep, i basically just toss and turn. Unfortunately, the only thing that be on tv are those darn infomercials. Sometimes i have so much going on in my mind that it drives me crazy. I try not to think of anything at all, just go completely blank when that happens. I don't do sleeping pills though.

I am usually pretty tired after chasing after my kid all day, and because i'm almost 9 months preggo, i am tired all the time.. but i have moments at night when i can't stop worrying about what's going to happen once the baby gets here. . And i just try to concentrate on my breathing (its really hard to do!!) and if that doesnt' help, then i'll come out and mylot for a little bit! And then my eyes will start to get droopy and i'll know its time to go lay back down.
Other times, if i dont want to get out of bed, then i'll try reading a bit, that seems to help a lot!

Hey there... Sometimes when I cant sleep and my minds racing, I quiet my mind and relax my whole body, thinking and visualising about a place that would be special for me or where I'd feel at peace and undisturbed, no strings no stress and no worries, just perfect bliss, I find in know time Im sound asleep, the next morning I get feeling fresh and energised... This works for me and takes time to get use too, but very beneficial for anyone...

This happens to me pretty often. I used to just close my eyes until I doze off. However, it doesn't work all the time. What I do is burn or lavender-scented or vanilla-scented or almond-scented oil and listen to josh groban or any related music.

Well the easiest way for me to fall a sleep is watching tv, I just close my eyes for a second and I fall a sleep. I know a lot of people that can not sleep with tv on because or they concentrate on the movie so they can not fall a sleep or the light of tv bothers them so they can not sleep because of it. I tried a lot of different ways to fall a sleep because I know that it is not healthy to fall asleep with tv on but I do not do that very often, just when I really can not fall a sleep. I have even tried counting sheep but it does not help...when I was younger I used to tell stories to myself and imagine things but this does not help me any more.

When it happens to me and I know that I must get to sleep because I have to get up early the next day or whatever the reason, I do a few different things. One, I write down what I am playing in my head. Sometimes it's things I want to remember that I have to do. So, if I write them down, then I won't worry that I will forget. If I am worried about something I can't control, then I remind myself that I can't do anything about it. What will be, will be. I take deep breaths, slow to exhale. I will also tighten my muscles as tight as I can, then slowly relax them. After that, if I am still awake I will count backwards from 100. If I make a mistake, I go back to 100 and start again. I have never made it to 1.

Thank you I truly enjoyed reading your reply. It almost made me sleepy just thinking about it...hehe
And was definitely enlightening to hear your remedy about things that you can't control. As I know I can't control or change any of it in the wee hours. I just have some tough decisions to make, but am trying to just let each day take care of itself. Patience is not my virtue though...eeee gads
Thanks again Suki ; )

This is such a good question, I wish I had thought of it! ;)
I stay up later on the computer usually or watching the shows I've taped on dvr. Which in turn just makes me have to stay up later. My husband doesn't like it, as I wake him when I come to bed. And he's not a light sleeper. I am. Hence my problem.
But one thing that makes my head hit the pillow, is doing a crossword puzzle in bed or reading a magazine or book.
And the last thing I do, is start praying. Mind you, not about actually going to sleep, but about problems people in my life or I am having. And I pray for everyone's health too.
I hope this helps... what have you tried?

Hey Betty, thanks again for your comment, all good things to try! I have found lately that I can pray myself right to sleep. Prior to that I was just sitting and thinking and trying to figure it all out. But have learned once I start talking with God (as if he were sitting there and my best friend ....WHICH HE IS) I just leave it all with Him and I fall asleep; ) Sad to say I had gotten away from this for way too long. Uggghhh....I didnt mean for this to turn into a religous rant, but I am happy to know I am not alone.....Wanted to share! Take Care~c

It is very rare for this to happen to me, I get the opposite more often lol.
But sometimes after a stressing day there is a lot in my mind and I cant stop thinking about stuff, and cant sleep. So I do a little exercise that I learnt in Yoga.
Lay down, belly up, and concentrate on your muscles, make sure they are all relaxed. I usually go little by little, to make sure they all really are... most often my facial muscles are not, or fingers.
Then start taking deep breath through your nose. Count 4 seconds inhaling, and 8 seconds exhaling slowly, always through the nose... Again, 4 seconds inhaling, 8 seconds exhaling....
Again, 4 seconds inhaling, 8 seconds exhaling...
Again, 4 seconds inhaling, 8 seconds exhaling...
Again, 4 seconds inhaling, 8 seconds exhaling...
Again, 4 seconds inhZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...
Bingo!

Focus on breathing and instead of trying to fall asleep, try to stay concious while sleeping. That or I get drunk or hit the codeine.

that's weird because that's exactly what i do to fall asleep.. i let my mind wander off to different things.. conjure different worlds and live them through my mind.. afterwards, i find myself drifting to that world as i sleep.. lol.. but i think i undrstand your dilemma.. i think what you're saying is when thoughts keep on racing through your head.. this is where dumbbells come into place.. do some bicep curls really slowly and you're muscles will slowly lull you (if you're not yet bored by the repetitive motions).. or else, read a book... or do what i do, try to stay awake longer and you'll find yourself yearning for the sack.. lol..
