What is kennel cough?

Hi all, I will be taking my dogs to the kennels soon and we have been advised that they need a kennel cough vaccination, but what is kennel cough? Is it purely from having many dogs together and just how serious is it. I don't mind spending the money on getting them vaccinated but I am worried about how dangerous this disease could be? Have any of your dogs suffered from it and what are the symptoms to look out for? Any help would be appreciated, thanks.
