I have purchased a few, oh who am I kidding, SEVERAL exercise DVDs. A couple of them were Yoga for weight loss. Now when I have watched them it doesn't seem like you are moving fast enough to be burning many calories or getting your heart going. Does yoga really help for weight loss?

If your Yoga DVD has a sequence called "Sun salutation" and "Moon Salutation" or something that sounds like that it will increase your heart beat and help you lose weight trust me. People who tell you Yoga doesn't help you lose weight have obviously never actually done it. It is much harder than it looks, holding those positions for the right amount of time is nearly impossible when you first start, I had to keep stopping when I first began as it was so tiring. When you do it you might find Yoga isn't for you and you prefer to just do one of the cardio-vascular work out DVDs, but give it a try you will be surprised how tired you get after you've done it. Though you actually feel better and slightly energized too it's not all bad. :)

I don't think yoga is really designed for weight loss. They just put that on there because it sells more DVDs

Even though you are not getting your heart rate up you will loose some weight as well as become more flexible and strengthen your muscles (which will help burn calories). I suggest that if you want to loose weight pick up a kick boxing video and do any of the strengthening exercises using weights (after you get use to doing the work out of course0, alternate that video with your yoga.

Definitely yoga will help for weight loss. but it is slow process but permanent,it has taken one year for me to tighten and shape the body, And mainly for the ladies it is very good. Because i spent so much money for fat-reduction, which was left as temporary, At the age of 35 only i started the Yoga and now i am 48 but looks very active and fit.And also women can avoid so many problems which happens at the age of around 40 s.

If you are regular with doing yoga you will know the asana-' Suryanamaskar' will really help in weight reduction.Suppose you start with 5 in the begining just keep increasing the numbers and you will see how this works in reducing your weight. I have seen many of my friends who were once very fat lose fat just by doing the suryanamaskar.Ofcourse you have to watch out your diet too simultaneously.

Yoga can help you with weight loss- different types will help you out in different ways, though. For example, the slow, pose-holding yoga will strengthen your muscles and build flexibility, both of which will help you burn calories faster. If you're going for yoga that is in constant motion- for example, doing several Sun Salutations at once- then you'll be burning more calories at once because it gets your heart rate up.

Only if you do ashtanga as yoga is more for increasing flexibilty and becoming more in tune with your body. It will tone your body but if you want to burn calories the gym would be better.
