Do you ever judge a book by its cover?

I don't usually. Although, good cover art can be a temptation. I usually read for the author. The book I am reading right now is by an author that I like but, the cover art is really appealing. So, if I was unfamiliar with the author, I may have chosen this book just based on the art on the cover. How shallow is that? But, it is uncharacteristically shallow! Rest assured!

No .Never.I always judge books by the author and by reviews only. But I just cannot deny the fact that the covers are luring and very attractive.

LOL! Sorry! The name of the book I am reading right now is "Sleep No More" and is by Greg Iles. The book by him that I wasn't crazy about was Third Degree. And, the cover of Sleep No More is very alluring. I have had some time to delve into it last night and today and, I am pretty hooked now! It took until about page 80 or so for it to really catch some speed and become intrigueing! At least, in my opinion!

Same here. The book I am reading right now is by an author that I like. I read a book by him 2 books before this one and was less than impressed. But, I read 2 other books by him that I loved. So, I was up in the air about it until I saw that Stephen King gave this book such high praise that I am hoping it will be wonderful. It has started off a little slow but, hopefully Stephen King's insight won't be off target.

Most of the books I read are from authors I've never heard of-though, that's really because I just like trying new authors to see if I'll like them or not. Since the books are written by people I've not heard of, reading about the author doesn't really tell me much about the book itself, so it's really reading a paragraph or two of the first chapter that tells me if I might like it or not. I have to say though, that for the "unknowns", the cover art can really make a difference, even if it's just a slight one. Many covers show an image that resembles a possible scene described in the book, so it helps to give me insight into what the book is about. For those books that don't have a scene, or no real cover art to speak of, then there's no choice about judging it by the cover. When that happens, I go back to reading into the first chapter, and go from there. As to the authors I do know, it wouldn't matter if they covered their books in coffee stains and mashed potatoes-I'd just make sure I had some wet-naps on hand when I read.

I think I can stick them in the CD tray, so I'll see about emailing you a few. But, if he's going to spit on the book, then you might need some hand sanitizer, too. Afraid the CD tray's not big enough for that. Sorry. LOL.

I feel that way about Dean Koontz. He could pretty much spit all over it and I would still read it! I guess I could just see if you had any extra wet-naps to lend to me! LOL!

It depends. Am I buying the book, new or used? If so, I read titles, look at covers, pick up and try & read the "blurb." I am less likely to buy/read a book where all they have is comments and no blurb about the book. I don't care if Time or Scientific American or even Steven King likes a book, give me some details about the book to see if *I* will like it. If I am checking it out of the library, I am actually a bit more likely to pick up and look a book by its cover. Is it very worn? That means its been checked out a lot, probably means its a pretty good book.

Those are really good points! I don't usually read the acclaims. I look for the summary. The one acclaim that I read by Stephen King for a book by Greg Iles, was unusual for me. I just happened to see his name and read it after I had already purchased the book. And, that is a really good point about the amount that a book is worn in a library. The more wear and tear the book has, the more hands that have probably been on it! Great point!

The art/graphics on a book will definitely grab my attention, however before I buy it, I read the story's summary. Most of the time, the book with the most graphics and attractive designs, lacks a storyline. I guess that is why that particuliar book has such a nice exterior, so it can make up for the lack of content on the inside. Kind of like how people are. Well, at least the ones I know. They are pretty on the outside, but on the inside, they are ugly. But anywho, if it was a book by Stephen King, then I will buy that book in a heartbeat.

I feel that way about Dean Koontz. I used to feel that way about Stephen King. I still like Stephen King. He has a new book either coming out or already out that I plan on getting some day. But, my absolute no fail favorite is Dean Koontz.

I had to admit, I do have to like the cover to read a book. Well most of the time. But seeing as the author who wrote the book and the illustrator who designed the cover are usually different people, I know it's not a good thing to judge it by it's cover. Lately I find, some books may have really nice art work in front but the book is kind of boring. And some books have unpleasing art in the front but the story is real nice.

grabbing a book really depends on how i know the author writes because if i haven't read any from that author and even if the summary of the book is tempting (as summary always are tempting) i'll have a second thought of it. but if i read so many writings from that author, even if the cover is so dull that nobody would ever pick it -- i'll give it a try.

There have been some poorly written summaries that I have come across. I have actually rejected a book based on the summary. I have a rule, if I am easily distracted while reading the summary, the book goes back on the shelf. But, that rule doesn't apply to a familiar author like Dean Koontz. I know, without a doubt, that I will love whatever he writes. But, another Author that I like is Greg Iles. However, I won't just pick up any old book by him. I have 4 of his books, the third one I read was boring until the ending. Not worth the time put in to get 60 pages of fun. I am reading another one by him right now and it is slow so far. But, it had really high acclaim by a lot of people, including Stephen King. So, hopefully it is just a slow beginning to turn into something spectacular!

I try not to let the cover sway my decision...Unless I'm going to buy a particular book,in which case the cover is irrelevant,I'll break my choice down by Author, cover synopsis,or genre, depending what I'm in the mood for..I used to get some of my favourite Author's back catalogue by checking out used book places...good books get reprinted, and older versions can be found in these places-same book as the one with the flashy brand new cover, just older cover art... As long as you enjoy the book and don't regret the choice later,is the main thing :)

I have only semi-regretted my choice once about a book. The ending was really good but, getting to the ending was difficult. So, I can completely understand your point!

yup i've done this before. most of the time the illustration on the front cover attracts me, and then only i'll read the summary at the back of the book. if it's as interesting as the cover then that's it- i'm definitely buying! haha.

I do that occasionally. But, not often. I do have to admit that a bright, flashy cover can catch my eye and then the summary, if it is an unfamiliar author.

Ya what I normally do is. Read the titles and if I find one that sounds interesting then I look at the cover and if it looks interesting then I will read the write up on it. And so far it has worked very well for me.

I don't usually judge a book by its cover, though the color and artwork can be eye catching. If it catches my eye i'll pick it up and read the back to see if i'll be interested in it.

i never judge a book by its coverpage i look for a good author and then read the plot or synopsis of the story which is printed at the back of the book .... if it is appealing i go ahead and buy the book if i dont find a author with whome i am familiar i judge the book by the critical acclaim it has recieved

I prefer to do the same. Usually the synopsis or summary is what gets me. Most of the time, I grab based on the author but, occasionally I will see a cover that will catch my eye by and author I am not familiar with but the summary does nothing for me. So, I guess it is a good combination of the cover, author and summary for me that helps me with my decision. I read a book recently by an author that I like a lot but, the book was actually barely worth the read. The ending was great but getting to the ending was really difficult throughout most of the book. Thank you for your comment!

Same here. While a good cover might initially catch my attention, it is usually the artist first and, then, if I read the summary and it loses me, I'll just leave the book back on the shelf and look for something else. Regardless of how cool, unique or interesting the cover art is...if the summary loses me...it is over! LOL!

I do like appealing covers. Some of the cover art is truly amazing. Although the "fancy" covers that have cut outs are annoying because they are usually torn from getting caught on other books. As for the synopsis, it does not always accurately summarize the story. Over the years, I've come across a few books where the synopsis was so far off the story line, I had to wonder what book the synopsis writer was actually detailing. My main criteria in choosing a book is the author's style. With unfamiliar authors, I will read the synopsis to get the story line, then I will read the first few lines of the book. If I'm not caught by then, or if the flavour of the book is "darker" than what I am in the mood for, I won't buy the book.

I actually stock-piled some new books today. The new one by Stephen King, one by Dean Koontz and one by Dan Brown. I read both of the Davinci books by him so, I picked up another one by him (sorry...I can't remember any of the titles right now except Tick Tock by Dean Koontz) then I read the summary on the back of Dan Brown's book. I was up in the air about it so I read the first page and decided it was intrigueing enough to pick a copy up. Hopefully it will prove to be another great read by him.

I don't think it's shallow whatsoever. But I sort of want to turn the discussion around. I find that books with a bad cover most of the times ARE bad books. So I won't choose a book because of it's cover, but I'll rather skip books because of them. Which might make me miss a possible masterpiece every now and then, but then again, I find that the cover is important as well. If you look at the great writers, you won't find a lot of horrible covers. Obviously there are exceptions, as you mentioned yourself, but I do find this to be a rule. And yes, like everybody else, I will look for authors, or read reviews and base my choice on that.

I am sorry I am so late in responding. I think I agree that there are occasionally books with really bad covers that are also really bad books. Not often. There have only been a handful of books, or less, that I have read where the book actually was a poor choice, but, I also chose that book based on the author. So, it was my fault! LOL! And, if you looked at my bookshelf, you would likely see that most of my books have rather dull covers but, there are masterpieces within. You would never know it by the look of the outside. So, I guess that is why I try not to judge a cover first. In fact, I would have to say that Dean Koontz is not notorious for great cover art but lets his words do...well...the talking! LOL!

I must admit that I look at the cover. I read the fly leaves. I read the cover. I also will read part of the book before I check it out in the library or purchase it. I do not see anything wrong with using a cover to help make a decision especially if you do not know the author and do not know if the book is something that you will like.

Sometimes, if the hubby and I go to a bookstore, while he is browsing I will sit and read a few pages of a book that caught my attention to see if the beginning can hold that initial attention. But, usually, either the author or the summary will catch and keep me or lose me.

I sure don't. But sometimes when i look for movies to watch i do that i don't know if its the same principle though. I have books that i bought that i haven't even gone through the first chapter and i left it, not because it wasn't good nor it was bad but i forget about it easy.

I actually think that cover art for movies is more important than the cover art for a book. That is funny that you forget about some of your books! LOL!
