Can you explain the Gun Control Argument - Pro and Con?

I just don't get it. I understand that we don't want government taking away our right to defend ourselves. But why does it have to apply to ALL fire arms? I just don't buy "because it's in the Constitution"... what are the pros and cons that I have missed all these years? Can anyone give me an explanation of this issue, please?
